    Tire mounting lube?

I have been using plain old motor oil or gear oil for a couple decades with no issues. When I take the tires off after they're worn out, the rubber shows no issues, and is nice and soft still. I did used to use grease, and had no issues with that either. I like the petroleum lubes as they won't...

    TecoMaster Canada Snap on ratchet

Snapmom, how do you find Tecomaster tools in Florida? I used to regularly go to a big flea market near Seattle in pre-Pestilence days (quite close to the Canadian border), and never saw Canadian tools. I'm amazed some turn up in Florida. Cobbler, I have an early '50s Tecomaster lawn mower with...

galvanized vs aluminum roof pipe boots?

I would (did) use lead, and the "hat" top piece. Using the hat means you don't have to seal the pipe to the base piece, which roofers often do. That seal eventually leaks. I was surprised how much lead cost though.

    Vintage Air Compressors

Very nice Michelin (M. Bibendum?) air compressor. I guess that gauge reads in bar (atmospheres) since it's French. It would be nice to be able to restore the gauge, and of course the whole thing.

What is this Machinist Tool? Large Grinder.

I've also never seen the grinding operation not continue over the entire length of the part. Very poor practice. Usually grinding is done wet as well.

The Mysterious FILSON Tools...mystery now solved (at least, in part)!

"References to the HF M2 being made through the Vietnam era suggests that the company survived in some form after 1957." Is there any chance that since the part was made only for the military, old dies continued to be used bearing the defunct company name, but by a different company?

Brass Parker o-ring seal tool/pick set

The current ones Parker makes are yellow plastic. That way they won't scratch even soft aluminum. For use on steel, I think brass would make a better tool.

    Vintage Air Compressors

Yeah, they have two pistons, a low and a high pressure. I didn't know if the rotary reference was to some other feature of them. I could even get the bore and stroke from the data plate if anyone was interested.

"Are the head rotary type?" I'm not sure... how can I tell?

Here's a couple Ingersoll Rands supposedly from the WWII time frame still in use at a secret installation up here:

Oil tank firestop petcock/valve: How to replace?

I bet the reason that the tank has no rust or sludge in it is because the fuel outlet is at the very bottom, so any debris or water will leave the tank and instead be caught in the filter. I like this idea better than tapping the fuel a couple inches from the bottom, and leaving the water to...

    TecoMaster Canada Snap on ratchet

Here's some Tecomaster sockets I picked up recently at our local flea market: Did someone say that 13/16" wasn't included? How about the ever popular 25/32" and square plug sockets? N.B.: they are all 1/2" drive. I tried to insert full images, but can't quite figure it out. Can...

    Best Staple Gun?

"when it would get a buildup of tar you'd bring it over to Mayhill St in Saddle Brook. A man in a lab coat would come out and take it away. 10 minutes later you had a good as new tool and a box of staples-free of charge. " Must have had a vapour degreaser tank? I bought a Makita 12 volt...

    Hello from Vancouver Island

$15 for a cup of coffee? The going rate is $2 to $4. I can't imagine where you found such an outrageous price, must have been some tourist trap. I like to travel down once or twice a year to the Seattle / Tacoma area, and the Olympic Peninsula. It's very scenic in the rural areas.

    Hello from Vancouver Island

I'm a good proof reader! But too much attention to detail means it takes me ten times as long to build anything. I'll look at the lumber and try to figure out how to end up with the worst bits of knots and such in the off-cuts, by carefully planning all the cuts. So - is coffee cheaper down there?

    Hello from Vancouver Island

"Your coffee costs too damn much." Yeah but at least I know how to spell Seattle.

Hello everyone! I'm new from Japan.

I like your Alpha, it looks not a lot larger than the car in my shelter - a 1969 Corolla! Did you use the traditional units of measurement when building? I was amazed to learn that you can buy measuring tapes in these units, I think they are "Raku" and one Raku is very close to our foot -...

    Hello from Vancouver Island

Well when registering, the site asked where my garage was, so I entered "Beside my house". But apparently it meant where, geographically, I live. So I'll update that. I'm at the southern tip of this 290 mile long Island. I also have to look into the settings, since I didn't get any...
