    Hey from Minnesota

Welcome. I live north of Duluth just over the border in Canada. I bought a boat in forest lake last year. I'm in the process of building a 32x40 right now. But I'm mostly spending time doing snow removal rather then carpentry these days.

never had to plow the inside of my garage before

I gotta get this roof up! I finished framing the walls for my garage before Christmas, then priorities changed when the wife wanted me to finish the house first. I got my lift up and running and the trusses delivered last week, then a foot and a half of snow came. Here's what I did today:

worth it to convert 3 phase compressor to single phase

That's all the info I have on it right now. Your hvac equipment explanation makes sense as it us a local mechanical hvac company that is selling it. Where I am there isn't much that comes up used.. but I'm also not in a huge rush. if I found something new for 600 I'd probably go for it, but in...

metal roof garage next to asphalt roof..pics and opinions wanted

Yes, the siding and trim will match, I built my house last year and almost have enough leftover to side the garage, just have to order a small quantity. The garage will be about 30ft from the house. You will turn left just before the house to drive into it. Any pics of your parents house with...

metal roof garage next to asphalt roof..pics and opinions wanted

Nice pergola over the entrance..I'm assuming the pillars will be stone of some sort? I also went through the same decision making process as you with my house. We also went with the same shingles as you, but chose the color a shade lighter than the Onyx black.

worth it to convert 3 phase compressor to single phase

It's it worth purchasing to convert this three phase compressor to a single phase? Is it a matter of just a new motor? $300 DeVilBiss Air Compressor, 208 volt 3 phase 3hp motor Canadian dollar also..worth nothing now :-) If its worth it, where do I get the motor? Here's the pic

metal roof garage next to asphalt roof..pics and opinions wanted

Trusses going up on garage this week. Obviously roofing directly after. I'm trying to convince myself that at metal roof won't look bad next to my asphalt shingled house. I'd like to know what two different roofs like next to eachother. Examples would bee awesome. a picture of my house...the...

Another opinion thread. heating a 30x40. And insulation question.

Foam board is one of the best insulators when properly installed (no gaps). definitely leave it in place. post some pics and then we can comment on how to proceed in the easiest most cost effective fashion. heat travels in three ways (same as electricity). Convection (air or liquid flowing)...

Fighting Frost on Exposed Foundation Walls

Around the exterior of my house i used a product from menards. It's 1"xps foam with a stucco finnish. They stock 2'x4' boards, but larger boards are available. I'm not sure of the height of exposed concrete on your perimeter, but i had 6" exposed, sor i ripped the boards to 1'x4', and burried...

    Spray foam under slab

when you do the math, if an eight thousand pound truck's tires has a square foot of tire footprint, then that truck plus the weight of a 6inch rienforced concrete slab would load the base under each tire at 14.93psi. also 6 inch is overkill for slab thickness.

What's all needed to insulate the roof side of attic and not cieling?

spray foam is sufficient in itself for air / vapour barrier. and i think that after spray foam is installed, the installation of rigid board would be difficult due to the imperfect nature of the spray foam. If you go to the expense of spraying the foam then do a sufficient thickness to be all...

    24X38 3 car with loft

awesome build... I thought I noticed a unit heater upstairs on the wall. how'd you heat it. btw, I spent a lot of time trying to find pics of an attic truss rec room like yours and I also decided today prior to seeing these pics, to do almost exactly what you did with your staircase and the...

    32x40 w/ attic trusses

Shill68, I'm envious of the prices you guys have.. that's why i do much of my purchasing down there. I bought my travel trailer in Mound, mn and saved $8000 over buying in canada. Same with my boat which i bought from Lake Minetonka.... Wow, those places are amazing! SpeedFreak, the walls are...

    32x40 w/ attic trusses

Thanks darren. Today i did the rest of the wall framing.. and of course with the next few days of beautiful weather coming up, weve scheduled a trip to duluth, mn. And of course thr day we get back the temps are forecast to plummet just intime for me to raise the trusses. Oh well.

need solution to heat attic separately

Our inspection on accessory building construction is limited to framing inspection so i dont have to meet any other requirements aside from utilities. Ill check out your link re: air sealing As i said though. I was wondering about the heater in the lower area being enough to heat both the upper...

    some framing questions

Thanks for the shear wall info. wind loads aren't much of an issue here really, but I did like the drawings for the simpson strong walls. I went on amazon and ordered the 24" straps which I will use in the same manner as the diagrams you posted. I decided to make my short walls on either...

need solution to heat attic separately

My insulation for this garage was quoted at $2700 for just fiberglass batting, r19 walls and r38 attic. and I'm a contractor so I get really good prices. I think the price differential between Canada and the US is much greater then many of you realize. excellent link to insulating the knee...

need solution to heat attic separately

As far as air sealing, I had planned an open stairway with no door. and my air barrier plan was to run poly on the vertical garage walls, horizontally across the ceiling which will terminate beneath the knee wall at a 2" xps piece of blocking. the blocking will be spray foamed between the...

need solution to heat attic separately

I'm not worried about cooling, we are in a zone where heating is the primary requirement. And we have regular temps below -20C so with the size of my garage, I don't believe the mini-split could meet my requirements. In fact, I don't think any HVAC contractors in our area even know what that...
