Why not put the opener where you want it. Then raise and lower the door manually and see if it binds up. if you did that a couple of times and it looked good I would go for it.

I would try acetone scrubbing with a scothbrite pad first,if that didn't work I would try paint stripper. Maybe even a clay bar.
