Getting a milling machine off a trailer...

Did a real Bridgeport recently, we went to the nearest rental yard and said "hey mister, how much to lift a fork lift for an hour?" He said $65. We couldn't get the forklift into the garage because of the mast height so we put some liquid soap/water on the floor and two of us pushed it to the...

    Non Name-Brand LED Bulbs

And to think...when they introduced CFL bulbs and were phasing out incandescent stuff, I stocked up on 100W bulbs.....and promptly installed LED bulbs everywhere.....some day, I will sell all my 100W resistive bulbs to a collector...I hope.

    Non Name-Brand LED Bulbs

First, anything that is the "Lights America" brand are trash and not worth bringing home. I have been buying bulbs from SuperBrightLEDs.com for a couple of years and they sometimes get bad lots of bulbs....I email them if the bulb dies and they replace them. Also, I try to buy only Cree LEDs...

    Tools that always go missing?

In the early 1970"s Sears would occasionally have a 99 cent sale on Craftsman wrenches. I would buy five 9/16" combos and five 1/2" combos.....and they would disappear. At that time, I mainly worked on Chevrolets for myself and friends. One car I had worked on came back for another...

McMaster has a tutorial for couplings https://www.mcmaster.com/#=16629bv Note that some couplings can be accomplished one handed and others require the sleeve on the female to be slid back with one hand while inserting the male with the other hand.

Investing in a cordless system: Ridgid Gen5x or Milwaukee M18 Fuel?

Go to CPOMILWAUKEE.com for good pricing on new and refurb'd tools. Their refurbs have same warranty as new.....except for batteries.

Any way to keep flys out?

The bug-a-salt gun is the greatest invention.....at some point, you start welcoming flies just for the chance to blow them away with salt. My next attempt is to learn *********** the flies on the wing.....with salt. Should be a challenge since the salt gun range is pretty low. Wing shooting...

    Tilt up concrete walls

Tilt up was first used in America in 1905 according to Wickipedia. I thought I had invented it when I was about 6 years old but my dad (who worked with concrete every day) told me that I was a bit late on my invention.

Worried my barn will be condemned- permit strategy?

What about property tax ramifications involved in "remodel" vs "tear it down and start over"? Seems like you could get a larger tax bill if it were a new build.

    Garage door hard to open

Also you might check to see if the door is "parallelograming", i.e., the door rollers are not parallel to the tracks. When you do the original tug, you are adjusting the door slightly. When you close it, it settles into a nonaligned position. Perhaps you are having to move the panels slightly...

    Power Off Alarm?

There used to be an alarm device that would place a phone call to your programmed number if the power went out.....and you could also buy a water pressure detector as an add on....if I remember correctly. It also had a temperature alarm that signaled you if the temp dropped below some preset...

    How many garage doors?

We have a couple of 10W X 14H doors....width is a pain backing a trailer into OR our flatbed truck has mirrors that are about 9ft wide (outside to outside) If I had it to do again, it would be a 12 ft wide door.

auto lift - planning for a garage

Walk around your present garage all bent over and looking at the ceiling....will give you an idea of the pain a too-low lift will cause. Did your boss hire you and say "he's almost good enough but I sure saved money on him!"? I did a 14 ft ceiling so I can store a car under the lift.

    LED Shop light- questions?

LED lights are DC, an LED will not operate on AC.....the AC is converted to DC internally for the lamps that run off an AC line. LEDs do not flicker unless the supply is a poorly regulated DC line. Some LED lamps do emit a noise that you can hear. I also suggest that you buy the best...

How buying Snap On may actually cheaper than Harbor Freight

This thread is a great example of what is wrong with the internet. Like Loscaldazr said in post #62, we have grown men furiously typing retorts. IF I was at a bar sitting with my beer, I could see a similar exchange of different opinions BUT, it would escalate where people could yell, cuss...

    Jet mill - any good?

I sold a friend one of our Bridgeports for his garage. We rented a forklift and took it to his house. We poured a bucket of water on the garage floor and the two of us pushed the mill into place. Water dried and we put rubber isolators under each corner. Biggest challenge was to get the...

    Jet mill - any good?

If you can access the machine, take a dial indicator and measure the screw backlash in both X and Y. A few thou is OK. If the machine is under power, run the spindle speed up and down while listening for noisy bearings. Generally, the spindle is somewhat noisy with no side load but really bad...
