    Mag starter help

Thanks for help guys, these are good ideas. I never thought of the pressure switch, that makes sense.

    Mag starter help

Nope, no buzzing. Just a popping noise when the thing releases. Almost sounds like a backfiring noise.

    Mag starter help

I think the starter was wired correctly. I was a used unit that came out of an Detroit Edison service center so I would hope they know what they are doing!! Plus the thing has worked okay for a couple years, although it doesn't get a lot of use.

    Mag starter help

I have an old IR T30 2 stage compressor that was converted to a 3HP 1ph motor before I got it. It was originally a 5hp 1ph unit. My problem is as the pressure starts building there was a "banging" noise out of the starter box. I took the cover off and I can see the magnetic button going in...

    Pole vs Stick built

This is a really interesting thread. I am getting ready to pull the trigger on a 30 x 40 pole barn and I have been thinking about the best way to finish the inside. It seems like the commercial girts are the way to go. This may seem like a stupid question but how are the girts fastened to the...

    Convoluted Surfacing Wheels for Grinders

I have been an abrasives sales rep for 20 years selling to industrial accounts. I don't think you will find a metal working shop that doesn't use a Scotch-Brite type deburring wheel. I am a big fan of wire wheels for removing crud and heavy rust, but for light deburring, fine metalfinishing or...

    Convoluted Surfacing Wheels for Grinders

I would use a fine grade silicion carbide wheel in a 8 or 9 density. If you are looking at 3M wheels I would use a EXL deburring wheel 9S-FN. A medium grade aluminum oxide wheel would blend your casting marks nicely but you would sacrifice the finish a little bit.

    Raccoons

We used to get raccoons coming into my Dad's shop, they would crawl through the small door he put in to let his cat out. They would come in and eat all the cat food. He used live traps to catch them and then he would paint their tails bright orange with spray paint. He would let them loose in...

Buying a house just to get the shop?

I just bought a house a couple miles from my existing home just for the pole barn. I live in a subdivision that doesn't allow barns so when I found an old farm house for sale with a 30 x 60 barn on 2 acres I jumped on it. Propery values in Michigan are in the crapper, I paid 80k for the...

    Grinding Wheel Decisions.

3M makes a product called "Bristle Discs" that look kind of like wire wheels but they are made of some sort of composite material with abrasive impregnated in it. They are available in coarse grades all the way up to extremely fine for polishing. The biggest problem is they are so expensive...

    Grinding Wheel Decisions.

I would skip the Silicon Carbide wheel altogether unless you want to sharpen tungsten. A regular A/O wheel will grind non-ferrous okay, it might load the wheel a little bit, but it dresses right off. Tampico and other cloth buff work well if you are polishing metal for plating, but you will...

Are "good" die grinders that much better than cheap ones?

3M is outsourcing the air tools. I think most are made in Taiwan, but the quality is very good. Like I said before those tools are beasts. 3M tried to buy Dynabrade a couple years ago and the deal went south at the last minute, I think the old guy who owns Dynabrade got cold feet. I think...

Are "good" die grinders that much better than cheap ones?

I am kind of a die grinder snob. I have been selling industrial tools for 20 years and have aquired a number of "demo" tools from manufacturers that I have used for my own projects. I have used Dynabrade, Dotco, Soiux, IR Industrial, 3M, and even cheapie HF tools. All the tools have held up...

    good decently priced bottom box?

The 42" HF box is smaller than the Snap on box I have, so its no really a far comparision. I think the bigger HF box is $650, I'm not really sure. Everyone has their opinions about how and what to spend their money on so I can respect what you are saying but I do not feel "abused" in any way...

    good decently priced bottom box?

Yeah, I know what your saying, it's still a lot of money for a box. I would have never considered buying it for $4300. I have always wanted a Snap on box since I was a little kid so this was a big thing for me. The up side is every time I go out to my barn and see my box it puts a smile on my...

    good decently priced bottom box?

I bought a new Snap-on Classic 78 bottom box for $2100 direct through Snap-on, and they also gave me a $400 gift certificate with the purchase thats good online or on the truck. The box lists for $4300. I am taking autobody repair classes at my local community college and Snap-on has a program...
