Restoring a Prentiss No 56 Vise (Help!)

Another late night with my vise... White lettering is done. The handle is starting to turn silver with a lot of work... but I like the results so far. The sliding jaw is out of the tank and waiting for some touch-up welding / flap wheel, then paint and polish... Good night all. gotta be up...

Restoring a Prentiss No 56 Vise (Help!)

I already had to weld the heck out of the slide... It was beat so much it had a 12" crack in it that was 3/4" wide at the end of the slide. I spent 4 hours pulling it back straight again, pre-heating, welding, and slow cooling the beam. I just did not know if I could fill in some more of the...

Restoring a Prentiss No 56 Vise (Help!)

BTW here is the primer I like to use on all rusty metal. It has protected my car and trailer frames very well. I use the UCP99 Gloss Black as a primer then top coat with Hammered Black Rustoleum. http://www.magnetpaints.com/underbody.asp The UCP99 goes on very thin, but is messy to apply...

Restoring a Prentiss No 56 Vise (Help!)

Here is the static jaw all primered and painted... still need to do the lettering. The sliding jaw/beam should be done tomorrow and then I'll be working on the garage mount. I decided to leave the scars on the vise... it does give it character and shows it has a long story. I did not find a...

Any opinions on using "Disc Brake Caliper Lube" on a vise?

"Contains molybdenum, PTFE and graphite" all the good stuff you would want ;) I am currently trying the "Permatex 24125 Ceramic Extreme Brake Lubricant". It also contains "lubricating ceramic solids" (whatever that is).

Any opinions on using "Disc Brake Caliper Lube" on a vise?

It does contain moly and so far (1 week of use on a smaller vise) I like it a lot. The vise tightens easier and releases without that feeling of grinding (kind of like sticking under pressure), but I have only used other vises with that thick stinky grease they ship with... probably not a good...

Any opinions on using "Disc Brake Caliper Lube" on a vise?

Using a high quality synthetic disc brake caliper lube for your vise? I tried it out on a Columbian and it seems to work great. Sticks to the screw and beam well, yet provides smooth operation. Anyone else using this... or have a better suggestion or reason for something else?

    Upgrade my compressor to 240V?

It will not increase the capacity of your air compressor. It is good if you want to pull less current and the motor will typically start without a large inrush of current when running 240v. I wired mine for 240v because it draws less current and doesn't pop breakers any more. When it was...

Restoring a Prentiss No 56 Vise (Help!)

So far the static jaw (just learned that term) is looking great. It should be done this afternoon and I will start painting it tonight, while the other jaw is in the tank. At this pace it will be done and installed by next weekend!

Coleman 28 gallon compressor "quiet" mod

Very nice! I thought I was the only one who liked to work all night... I wanted to keep my compressor quiet, so added a muffler/filter to the intake and pulled all the sheet metal covers off and applied winter roof stuff to the insides (like dynamat only much cheaper). I also added a...

Restoring a Prentiss No 56 Vise (Help!)

After 20 hours in the tank, the handle is 99% rust free and I think I am going to try and polish it back to silver then seal it with Flitz. The main body is in the tank now... it will probably need several turns and a few days to complete. I'm new to this... should I keep posting pics of the...

Restoring a Prentiss No 56 Vise (Help!)

That is why I am putting it back in use... I love to put old tools back in action. It will be mounted in the center of my garage (between the 2 bays) and see a lot of use by me and my 2 sons.

Question about clearing out the garage

Put it in the kitchen ;) then sign the divorce papers... I put my stuff on the back porch, covered it, and painted the floor last August (less chance of rain in August here in OH). Had to keep myself occupied with something other then tools for the week... Slept with the window open and the...

Restoring a Prentiss No 56 Vise (Help!)

I picked up a Prentiss No 56 vise last weekend. It has had a hard life... not as a vise, but as an anvil. It looks like it was used very little as a vise. The screw, and jaws are in great shape, but the beam was cracked half the length. It was so bad that the gap of the crack was just over...
