Wood screws and deck screws have an area before the head with no threads to pull the materials tight. Drywall screws have threads to the head. it does not allow the screw to "snug up" the piece you are driving through to the one you are anchoring to. And yes dry wall screws are more brittle.

Jim, I plan on working in my shop today so I was going to turn the thermostat up to 50. We have had lots of subzero temps lately and 50 will feel good wearing a hoody. I don't hand heat well though, so I suspect you are comfortable in temps that have me drenched in sweat.

I think if you check some granite stores they will cut scrap to fit that much cheaper than the couple hundred bucks you estimate. It may be worth fixing what you have if the broken granite is the biggest issue.

I have a 32 by 40 with 10 foot side wall height steel sided workshop that I get no cell reception inside. On the surface it sounds great to not get calls while I am in my "sanctuary" but I have to be on call for work. Is there a way to get better signal in there?
