The top was built with 2 sheets of maple ply (stacked on top of each other, for thickness) and then edged with a glued veneer to cover the plywood edge. Obviously, since it is plywood, only a thin outer layer is Maple, but it is a tight grain and not very porous. Thanks for the other resources...
