bringing a diesel generator back to life

I made up this video of one of my 15kW 3 phase diesel generator sets; this one has been sitting for quite a few years. I go through a reasonably thorough pre-start/repair procedure. Thought there might be a few people here who like to see that first startup...I know I always enjoy hearing an...

overload testing a 60 kW diesel generator

I have never tested the 60kW, but the 15 is about .7 to 1.5 gal/hr depending on load. That was just done using my watch and a 5 gallon diesel can, so it may be off a little bit but it should be fairly close.

overload testing a 60 kW diesel generator

Added another video to my original post; it is a clip of me testing a 15kW diesel set:

heating my shop with used motor oil

I just searched my local craigslist for "oil furnace" and turned up 6 ads for good candidates; one of them looks brand new for $200. Most of them are under $150. Not sure if the situation is the same in your area, but this time of year people are changing out their oil systems for more...

heating my shop with used motor oil

Made up a video of my furnace in operation, details on where I mounted components, etc. It doesn't cover the burner mods (but I covered that in the beginning of the thread). It does show the basic sequence of events that occur when the thermostat calls for heat and the overall design...maybe...

heating my shop with used motor oil

The only problem that I see with the tsat with NO/NC contacts is that it will shut the furnace off every time the heater cycles on; I would think that a second thermostat with a lower setting would allow you to dial in an acceptable temperature for furnace operation better. The TGC controller...

heating my shop with used motor oil

One could certainly be used to control the heater. You would need a second tstat (or some other kind of circuitry) to indicate when the temperature in the siphon tank has reached the proper temperature (you don't want your furnace to try to light off if the oil is 40 degrees). I like cool...

overload testing a 60 kW diesel generator

I use a 300kW resistive load bank; it was designed as a permanently installed artificial load for a large generator. Each bank of elements works out to about 10kW at 208v. If I need a load that isn't in a multiple of 10, then I just adjust the voltage on the generator to change how much load...

overload testing a 60 kW diesel generator

I've been pulling military surplus gensets around with my deuce for a few years now...although my deuce doesn't look too military anymore! The 60kW set was sitting on its bed during the video, although you really don't see too much of it. I have quite a few other youtube videos of the deuce...

overload testing a 60 kW diesel generator

That's obviously not a 6-71! 12v-71 maybe? Would love to hear that one in person as well!

overload testing a 60 kW diesel generator

Wondering if somebody would comment on that! It is a cold start in that the generator had not been started for several weeks...not that the ambient temp was particularly cold. Since I don't have a giant generator-sized freezer, my cold start was dictated by the weather here in the great NW in...

overload testing a 60 kW diesel generator

Cat engines have a sound that is uniquely Cat...and its a great sound! I may end up with a Detroit 6-71 powered set here sometime soon...the sound of a 2 stroke diesel is one that I enjoy as well...

overload testing a 60 kW diesel generator

The 120% load test is at about 3:00 in the video. At 3:21 the set is also running at 120% when I use the clamp on ammeter. Somebody quick with a calculator might point out that, at 208v, the 181 amps I am measuring works out to 65kW (208*181*sqrt3=65kw, or about 108% of rated load). Since I...

overload testing a 60 kW diesel generator

Yep...its amazing how much heat is created with that much power...even outside on a cool day everything in the vicinity of my load bank gets uncomfortably warm.

overload testing a 60 kW diesel generator

Almost! I was a nuclear ET in the navy for about 9 years...I dealt with milliamps and not amps. But, I enjoy working on diesel equipment and electronics, so these generators are a perfect hobby for me. I really enjoy that first startup and load run after a repair!

overload testing a 60 kW diesel generator

Made up a short video of a typical load/overload test that I do on my diesel generator sets. Thought I would share the sound of the turbo when I hit the set with 120% load. Makes me grin every time! edit: This is a clip of testing a smaller 4 cylinder 15kW diesel generator:

Welding using batteries and jumper cables

Thanks! Warn shot a bunch of video during an event last year...managed to get some free stuff and a few seconds of fame by doing a 6 wheel drift :bounce: It was pretty cool; we got free reign over the course for the entire day and there were a couple of pretty unique rigs there. I got to pull...

    Welding Paranoia

^ ditto There's no reason for the current to flow through any bearings if you have your ground clamp on the same material you are welding on. If you happen to clamp the ground lead to the engine itself (or the rear wheel, or the handlebars, etc.) and then try to weld on the frame, you are...

heating my shop with used motor oil

I have a friend with a setup very similar to this; he has a 5 gallon bucket suspended a few feet in the air above the fireplace. There is a length of 1/4" copper tubing that is plumbed into the bucket. The tubing takes a few turns around the chimney to preheat the oil. The fireplace has a...
