heating my shop with used motor oil

I had a few people that told me that they were unable to view my video of my burner running on my bench; to fix that I uploaded the video to youtube and edited my original post. In case anybody missed the update, here is a link to the video:

heating my shop with used motor oil

I went out into the shop this morning to find the safety tripped on the furnace for the second time in 1 week...so I pulled the burner out. I had noticed that the retention head was developing a thick scaly buildup, so I pulled it off and cleaned it up. Turns out that it was deformed and the...

Welding using batteries and jumper cables

Driver's side fender, with the battery's long dimension parallel to the engine. Its kinda tight, but a 34/78 optima fits. Glad to hear it! Post your experience up here...would like to see some feedback from somebody trying it for the first time.

Welding using batteries and jumper cables

You obviously either didn't read, or didn't comprehend my last post. This forum isn't pirate4x4, zuwharrie, naxja, or any of the other wheeling specific forums. It's the fabrication techniques section of the Garage Journal. I was demonstrating a technique for welding; a topic that I...

heating my shop with used motor oil

My setup is still running perfect; I vacuumed out the combustion chamber a couple of weeks ago and fired it up for the first time since spring. I am currently running a nearly 100% mix of hydraulic fluid in the tank...works great. I have been getting 100 gallons/month from my local sources...

Welding using batteries and jumper cables

I started this thread to inform members of this forum of a technique that they may not be familiar with, and to contribute to the credible information contained on the Garage Journal. Not to debate the pluses and minuses of the different methods of producing mobile welds. But, since you seem...

Welding using batteries and jumper cables

That's a sweet idea...I'm thinking I may try this. You can buy replacement shaded lenses for welding helmets in different sizes, curvatures, etc...seems like it would be easy to find one that fits a mask. Probably fine for short welding repairs, but the other function of the mask is to shade...

Welding using batteries and jumper cables

Here is what I carry with me. It's a small handheld shield. Ties up one of your hands, but doesn't take up too much space in the toolbox, and it works great when you need to get your head into some crazy tight space to see your weld...

Welding using batteries and jumper cables

I didn't choose 6011 as the proper rod to weld cast iron with; I was just suggesting that it was the most useful rod to carry in your toolbox for those emergency repairs. I wouldn't expect many trail repairs to be on cast iron. Buckgnarly is correct; I was presenting this as a macgyver like...

Welding using batteries and jumper cables

You get about 10 minutes of arc time, depending on the size and condition of the batteries and your welding technique. The arc does get cooler during this discharge...so it's a good idea to recharge the batteries during pauses in the welding. Allowing the batteries to fully discharge also...

Welding using batteries and jumper cables

The whole point of this was to demonstrate that you don't need to spent $1k for underhood equipment to produce a decent weld in the field. Sure, a premier power welder is a nice piece of equipment, but for the majority of us who can't spent the $$ on something like that, this method is a great...

Welding using batteries and jumper cables

You actually can't stick a rod with this method (at least, you almost can't). Because batteries are capable of producing 600+ amps (depending on the battery), the rod never sticks (as long as the batteries are charged). The deeper you push it into the puddle, the hotter the arc gets. It...

Welding using batteries and jumper cables

Its been a while since I posting anything here...so thought I would do a little contributing! I put together this short video demonstrating how to weld with a pair of batteries and a set of jumper cables. I've used this method dozens of times on stranded rigs; with a little practice you can...

heating my shop with used motor oil

If you still visit the area you're welcome to come check out my setup; I live on hwy 26 between Hillsboro and the coast. I did 9 years in the Navy as a Nuclear ET...

heating my shop with used motor oil

Welcome! Can't speak for everybody, but I'm still following this thread and posting updates...and I'm more than happy to answer any questions you have if you choose to try to duplicate my setup. I've burned thousands of gallons through mine with almost no issues. I have started to filter...

heating my shop with used motor oil

If you are planning on using the Hago nozzles (like I did), there are 7 available. I can't remember exactly which one I chose, but it was right in the middle of the pack... You can also adjust your firing rate by changing the air pressure at the nozzle. I adjust my flame pattern this way. I...

heating my shop with used motor oil

I'm just outside of Seaside; about 4-5 hours north of Coos Bay. Although I don't have any data to back it up, I have read that waste oil does indeed burn hotter than HHO or diesel. My opinion is that the flame size and shape is more important than how hot the fuel burns...if your flame is...

heating my shop with used motor oil

I know this was asked 4 months ago, but I just noticed, so forgive the delay :) I have spent about $60 on filters since I started using the furnace, about $5 to repair one burned out heater element, and a few minutes of my time each season vacuuming out the combustion chamber. That's it. I...

heating my shop with used motor oil

Since my thread is still alive, I figured I would post another update :) Working on year number 3 since I built my furnace...still no problems. Well over 1000 gallons of oil through it with no major problems... I have cleaned it twice (just pulled out the burner and ran the shop vac through...

heating my shop with used motor oil

I am using regular single wall furnace vent piping for my chimney, and then converting it to class "A" all fuel at the roof. That's kinda overkill for a furnace, but I already has the class A installed and I didn't want to step down to a different vent.
