Building garage walls using 2" steel tubing. Any suggestions

Intuitively, 2x2x14ga tubing doesn't seem to have the necessary stiffness to support the indicated roof load. Sheathing will up the bearing capacity but I really think you should consult with a structural engineer to see if the composite wall construction you propose will provide adequate roof...

    Cutting a Steel-Clad Entry Door

Depending on the type of construction, steel doors are usually 14ga. You can use a carbide blade in a circular saw if you want to but make sure you get a cheap one with as many teeth as possible. And don't figure on it being good for much else once you're done cutting down the door. If it were...

    workbench top

I'm a big fan of tempered masonite for bench a bench surface. I have it on the bench behind my engine lathe. Gets lots of cutting oil and swarf all over it yet cleans up quite well. I just drilled/countersunk holes for flat head drywall screws judiciously place to avoid any 'hollow' spots then...

    Plastic between slab and ground

Most concrete finishers that I've known don't particularly like a plastic vapor barrier as it prevents excess water from being absorbed by the ground thus it takes longer for the bleed water to evaporate to the point the slab can be finished. My personal preference is for a 2" layer of polyiso...

    Contractor's Work Quality

In my humble yet closely held opinion, you need to give the contractor a chance to remedy the situation to your satisfaction. Your satisfaction depending on what the original specifications called for in the first place. Good luck hiring a third party and getting any money out of the original...

pouring slab and plans for lift, need advice

This is the best advice you've rec'd so far. And yes, you need some kind of reinforcing. My choice is #4 @ 12"oc each way as a general rule. The loads for your post lift may require a thicker slab with more reinforcing so that's where the start.

    Boiler sizing for radiant heat

Give a lot of thought about using propane to fire your boiler! We had natural gas in our last house. Not available here in our new one. Gas is gas, or so I thought. Propane is, according to my dealer, a by product of gasoline distillation and thus goes up and (rarely) down with the fluctuation...

    Painting cinder block walls

Yep, you want to use a block filler type material for the first under coat. Then about anything will do but I'd go with latex.

    Lost a great friend today

It took me a year of grieving to get over the loss of our beloved Sam, but keep the faith. The fond memories will stay with you forever but the pain will eventually subside.

Removing An Old Cast Iron Sink

I gather the sink is top mounted rather than being tiled in. That is with the tile overlapping the sink rim. That being the case I wouldn't try jacking the thing out, rather I'd take a thin putty knife and carefully work it under and around the sink rim 'til it comes loose. Before you take it...

Garage Floor. Vinyl Wood or Porcelain Tile?

If it were me I'd just clean up the peeling paint down to (what I assume is) the bare concrete and leave it at that. Unless you have an issue with dusting of the concrete surface in which case there are some great products for densifying the surface of old concrete.

    Wood for starter projects?

Fresh cut wood is great for turning (lathe work) but as noted above, it takes a year per inch to air dry green lumber. The end grain needs to be sealed with either old latex paint or special end grain sealer sold for that purpose to keep the ends from checking and cracking. Be careful of walnut...

    Intro

Yeah, I found that thread after starting a new one in the general garage area. Is there any way I can move what I've already uploaded into the 'vices' thread to help with organization? I'd welcome allowing the moder-folks doing it if they like.

    Refrigerator problem ?

Our Whirlpool started icing up after only three years. Problem was the defrost heating element was burned out! Most current models have a heating element similar to a calrod element on an electric range. This one had a coil type element encased in a glass tube similar to the filament in an...

    Hollands 53 1/2 resto

Thanks for the replies, folks! And the advice on photo insertion. I'm still curious as to how that base ring could have been cast as a single piece. I'll try to get some more detailed closeup photos to illustrate. I shouldn't complain too loudly; I think I only paid about 50 cents a pound for...

    Hollands 53 1/2 resto

I Purchased this Hollands 53 1/2 some time ago and finally decided to break it down and get it in working order. Of course I failed to learn about buying a used vice before discovering this site so be kind ... I think the guy saw me coming. I should have taken a shot before getting it apart but...

    Intro

Greetings and thank you for making this place available! I'm retired, living in rural Skagit Co WA. and mainly a woodworker. Although I do enjoy pounding, bending and sticking pieces of iron together from time to time. A while back I bought and old (don't know how to date it) Hollands 53 1/2...
