    who hangs spanners?

I hang all my box end wrenches on my work bench. They're in order and I can quickly grab the wrench I need and can also quickly tell if I forgot to pick up a wrench. Another benefit it that it keeps my other tool boxes more organized. I could buy wrench organizers but then I would need another...

Does it still make sense to buy 3/4 drive tools?

I work on a lot of farm equipment. I wouldn't want to be without my 3/4 set or torch. 99% of the time I don't need 3/4 drive but when I do I couldn't do without. Lots of bolts are torqued to over 400 ft lbs on the farm and after 30 years or more 1/2 drive won't cut it.

Dipping my feet into machining. Should I buy a mini lathe?

Machining came easy to me but I'm a visual learner and can picture how to make things quickly. I was also extremely lucky acquiring necessary tools for cheap prices. I think with a little time and patience you can find a great deal on a full sized lathe. Tooling is where the money adds up...

Recommendations on a Good Penetrating Oil - Kroil Is Too Damn Expensive!

I usually use ATF and acetone but I picked up a can of Seafoam Deep Creep recently. It seems to work OK and doesn't evaporate like acetone if I mix up too much in a squirt bottle and let it sit. I should add that I'm not the most patient person to wait on rust so I use my torch a lot...

3/8" drive Ratchet & Breaker Bar torque failure info

I use a 3/8 breaker bar occasionally when I'm using a crows foot and extension. It's faster and easier to use a breaker bar than a ratchet. It's an old V series Craftsman maybe 12" in length. If I wanted to test the limits of 3/8 drive I would trust my ratchets more.

Icon Tools, what’s the consensus and is there something as good or better for the mon

In tight places a deep broach will let the nut slide back in the socket. Shallow broach will push the socket out. The majority of my deep sockets are shallow broach and usually not a problem. The post above mine is the most common issue I have with mine.

    Vintage Vise Locked Up

I have a Morgan Chicago 45 that was my grandfather's that was rusted up solid. It took me a year before I got it freed up. I tried PB Blaster, a torch, 20 ton press and none of that worked. I about gave up but put the vise in another vise and use a big punch and sledge hammer. I got it move just...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I was given this vise because it was locked up. It didn't take much to get it freed up but there was enough surface rust I knew it would lock up again soon if I didn't clean it up. I took the vise apart and didn't see any wrong with it or damaged so I wire wheeled the old paint off and removed...

Torque Test Channel - open-end wrench testing

I would like to see how SK X frames do in the open end test. Those wrenches have the anti slip end and v notch. Doing the test with grade 5 nuts would be interesting too but the bolt would be maxed out on Wright and other anti-slip grips end. The data might not be as informative but still...

Torque Test Channel - open-end wrench testing

I have a few SK long pattern wrenches in the bigger sizes. SK is usually on the shorter side which is sometimes a good thing. Wright regular wrenches I believe are longer than the regular SK ones.

Torque Test Channel - open-end wrench testing

Just about all my wrenches are SK but the results didn't surprise me all that much. My SK wrenches 3/4 and below seem questionable when using the open end but I don't use the open end to break loose bolts so it's not really an issue for me. The video has made be think about getting some Wright...

Best base to buy (magnetic or clamping) for dial indicator to check rotor runout during brake jobs?

I do but I use them mostly on my mill and lathe so I have plenty of flat metal to attach it to. I have used a magnetic base before while working on engines but I haven't thrown my cheap HF away just in case I need it one day.

Best base to buy (magnetic or clamping) for dial indicator to check rotor runout during brake jobs?

If you just want a cheap indicator base for the occasional use the HF one will be fine. I thought they were OK quality unit I started using a Mitutoyo and Starrett base and indicators. Those are night and day difference. I can zero the dial without moving the gauge. The next magnetic base I'm...

What makes Wilton bullet vises so desirable?

I'm done arguing. You're wrong. Tpi does not equal clamping force. Here's an example to show what I mean. Take two vises that have identical TPI. One vise has a very *********** like a C2 the other one has a shorter throat like a 500. The 500 will have a higher clamping because the ram is bigger...

What makes Wilton bullet vises so desirable?

And yet that has nothing to do with clamping force so I don't know what point you're trying to make. Perhaps the thread diameter is smaller and the dynamic jaw moves smoother. That would make the clamping force of two different size threads more similar. Higher pitch does have more of a...

What makes Wilton bullet vises so desirable?

8 tpi vs 14 tpi does not translate to 75% more clamping force so my point still stands. You inaccurately believe Yost has 75% more clamping solely because of the difference of TPI. Edit: I watched the strongest vise video again. Fireball did not test a Machinist Bullet vise. There were two...

What makes Wilton bullet vises so desirable?

My older Wilton is a one piece dynamic jaw. Some time during the 70s Wilton went to a two piece jaw which is suppose to be stronger. I used my Wilton to hold my stuck Morgan vise in a last ditch effort to free it up with a 10 lb sledge hammer and punch. The Wilton held it fine and the Morgan is...

    Best new electric ratchet....DeWalt 12v

I bought the Milwaukee M18 compact and a week later Dewalt comes out with their more powerful version. A week after I bought my M12 ratchet I saw Torque Channel release a video on Dewalt's new ratchet compared to Milwaukee. Every time I buy a new Milwaukee, Dewalt comes out with a new product a...

    Walmart USA made pry bars?

I just bought a John Deere 36" pry bar for $27.** after tax that was made by Wilde. Wilde seems to make pry bars for everyone.
