Best Bench Vice Of All Time

My dad has an old english Record vise. At least 50 years old. It has a quick release mechanism but no swivel base! This vise has only recently started to fail us. The former owner beat it up. My dad has been beating on it since the late seventies. It's the best vise that i have used. Very...

Why do you have a lathe?

If you build cars a lathe is an absolute must.. I have used it to make centering rings for when using wheels with a too big hub diameter. For making a custom serpentine system for when you dont have the correct brackets. Press on test-fit bearing hubs, spacers for crank pulleys and about a...

New 3 car garage owner...first steps?

4 post lift would be very foolish. A 2 post would be better. Far better. The 4 post lift is only better than a 2 post in very few ways. Like one or 2 i can think of.

19 Year old mechanic needing some advice please

As a mechanic having been in your shoes, my advice is slowly but surely to start working towards a different career. 10 years as a tech/mechanic is more than enough to net you a job elsewhere in a different sector. During those years acquire new knowledge as you go. Not "just" in automotive. But...

    Fender covers

Leaving the drivetrain out during painting gives the painter better access to paint the enginecompartment etc. I've built many cars. I really cant see what the big deal is. It is not like that installing a drivetrain scratches the paint. Unless you're clumsy and dont know what you're doing.

Why are American's tool boxes so big?

In scandinavia the shop provides the tools for the mechanics.. At big places each mechanic has a basic set of tools, and a source in the shop for when they need something additional. Works well. I work in a 2 car shop, 2 mechanics. We dont have tool carts and definitely no tool boxes. We have...

    torx versus phillips

Torx.. depending on usage. With philps i tend to chase the best screwdriver for each screw depending on wear and tear of the screw and driver. VW likes to use them for caliber bolts i have noticed.. Not ideal when they start to rust and collect dirt. In other words: Torx are good in small...
