Piston compressor sound vs. scroll compressor

Grassroots Motorsports posted a video comparing the sound levels of a cheap piston compressor (I think it's a oilless type) versus the Eastwood Elite scroll compressor. It costs around $1899, but the difference in noise is pretty impressive. You can jump to about 6 minutes 30 seconds into the...

Fireball Tool - giant vise build

Jason at Fireball Tool is in the process of building a crazy huge vise. Is one this big necessary? Probably not, but it's going to be pretty cool anyway. :) Plus, you get to see some neat fabrication. The first three videos are here...

    conduit install fail

I noticed this conduit installation in a parking ramp today. I guess the guy who did the work only had LB conduit bodies in his tool bag that day. :) (you need to have access to the covers on all fittings, he should have used an LL or LR instead.)

    Floor jack ID?

I bought this jack at a yard sale. In my initial inspection I didn't find any ID markings - any guesses on brands? From a quick look around the site at other jacks, I'm thinking it may be a Lincoln. The seller told me it was a 3 ton model. It's leaking, and it only goes up when the handle is...

four post lift installation video - Mustie1

YouTuber Mustie1 posted a video showing assembly and installation of a four post lift. I figured it would be a good reference video to cross-post here: His is a Wildfire brand, but all four post lifts are generally similar.

Diamond Tool and Horseshoe tool boards

I was looking through the tool catalog library at archive.org today, and came across a 1969 catalog for the Diamond Tool and Horseshoe Company. On page 22 of the catalog there are illustrations of several different tool boards that were available for retailers. I like the little diamond shaped...

    Minnesota 2020 building codes

For people in Minnesota who are planning a construction project, as of March 31 the state has updated building codes for 2020: The 2020 Minnesota State Building Code is effective March 31, 2020, except for the Minnesota Mechanical Fuel Gas Code, which is effective April 6, 2020. It is the...

    Garage door open sensor

People often post here asking about what they can use to monitor their garage door to see it was left open. I noticed this short article in the paper today about a product made by Wyze that goes along with their security camera. It sounds like a good and cheap solution. --- Wyze, a...

    Gerstner chest restoration

Adam Booth / Abom79 posted a video today of his Gerstner machinist's chest getting restored at the Gerstner factory. It's pretty cool.

Ordered some parts from L.S. Starrett

I have an L.S. Starrett bevel protractor and I need to replace one of the little retaining screws for the rotating part, so I called them today and placed an order. A nice lady answered the phone and helped me out; the interesting thing is they still write down order information by hand on...

    Vintage machinery tag reproductions

I was watching Keith Rucker's latest VintageMachinery.org video on Youtube tonight; a friend of his has started a home business reproducing ID tags for vintage machinery. Check it out: https://www.vonindustrial.com

    Tool restoration videos

I've been watching a bunch of tool restoration videos on Youtube recently - vises, anvils, hammers, screwdrivers, all kinds of power tools, etc. The trouble is that many of them are pretty lame...some guy grinds some rust off a tool he found in a pile of junk, spritzes it with some black paint...

How to build a garage videos

I've been watching Youtube videos from RR Buildings in Illinois, they specialize in post beam construction of barns, sheds, garages, etc. (they built that huge barn for Jimmy Diresta, if you saw that series.) Anyway, they are starting a new series of videos showing step by step how they build a...

    Stanley Workmaster and Professional screwdrivers

Back in 1974 I got a set of Stanley Workmaster screwdrivers for Christmas. I always really liked them, they had a nice triangular handle that fit my hand well and allowed for a lot of torque, and the shanks were high quality steel. Unfortunately, in the mid 1980s some lowlife stole my toolbox...

DeBoss Garage - how to start a mechanic business

One of the Youtube channels I follow is DeBoss Garage, he has an independent repair shop in Canada and is pretty entertaining as well as informative. His latest video is on how to start a mechanic's business: There's some good stuff in there about buying tools and toolboxes, as well as what...

Skip Barber auction - some tools for sale

Some of you may know that the Skip Barber racing school recently went bankrupt, closed up shop, and have been liquidating their assets. I see there's a Pexto shear, a lathe, some workbenches and some other shop/garage stuff up for auction: https://www.proxibid.com/asp/Catalog.asp?aid=134340...

There have been a lot of spam posts recently, here's what you should do.

Read the sticky note at the top of the page and follow the directions. Posting a reply to them just makes it a little more difficult for the mods to get rid of them. All you need to do is click on the report button.

    Maybe the ultimate welding table?

I stumbled across this Youtube video of an amazing welding table: It's WAY overkill for 99.99% of welders, but it is cool. I imagine they built it as a showpiece to demonstrate the design and fabrication abilities for their shop, and it certainly does that very well. :)

    Interesting belt sander

I don't know if anyone else watches Tubalcain's Youtube videos (he does a lot of machining and tool videos) but he just featured a pretty cool 2" x 72" belt sander. It looks like a pretty handy tool, with some useful attachments.
