Nearly had a fire...need to understand why breaker didn't trip.

So you're saying that they didn't have the Overheat Shut Off in the area that would overheat. Sounds like a poor design to me. Things wear out, things get old, things happen and the safety device in this unit obviously was not working. It obviously had it certifications which imply someone...

Nearly had a fire...need to understand why breaker didn't trip.

It's simple, it had an age related failure and a manufacturing defect from Day 1 of the Over Temp Shut Off device. Us manufacturers are not known for the highest quality standards or testing.

snap on ratcheting screwdriver....WHAT BRAND BITS?

That's true. I used to break tools once in a while. One day I noticed that some were better than others. I looked and and they were all "S2" brand and I also noticed that "CrV" was very good on some other products. I looked and could not find those brand names. hahaha I then realised they...

snap on ratcheting screwdriver....WHAT BRAND BITS?

Bits are consumables ! I look for ones that are "S2 tool steel". You are looking for bits for a hand tool. It is the quality of the operator not the quality of the bit that determines it's performance.

    Makers of dial calipers

I have never taken mine apart so I cannot comment on my innards or the innards of any other. What accuracy do you need? I used dial calipers and could read 1/1000ths. I got a digital one and it has been verified that it reads repeatedly half a millimeter which is 500 microns. I checked at my...

Anything to wipe on lightly rusted tools to give patina?

I'd use Fluid Film. I'd spray it on and it will clean the surface rust off and put a protective barrier down. https://www.fluid-film.com/

Those are big stores. I just used Google Maps and roughly measured the 2 Calgary stores and they are both 36-37,000 feet. I would go broke with 40% more area for stuff that somehow says 'buy me'.
