    Previous Owner Wiring

The whole thing is red flags. That 50A single pole isn't connected to anything. What I believe happened is this panel was taken from a home or business that had water or flood damage and he just repurposed it, as is, to work in the shop. The actual panel main at the top is not connected to...

    Previous Owner Wiring

The previous owner of my place fancied himself a handyman, and also ran a water and mold cleanup business so he had access to a lot of used parts. The 50A sub panel he installed for the shop is...well...a picture is worth a thousand words. The labeling is mine since it wasn't labeled in any...

Is a Drill Doctor the way to go?

Completely random assortment of various types laying intermixed in a drawer in the work garage. It's been so long that I couldn't tell you if they were coated or not. I'm not supposed to be doing "maintenance" work anymore...union regulations and such.

Is a Drill Doctor the way to go?

I've used a Drill Doctor. It makes the bit sharp enough to use for another hole or two, then it's dull again.

    compressor problem

What gauge wire over what distance from the main to the garage? What gauge wire over what distance from the sub to the compressor? Is the compressor the only thing on that 220 circuit? What amperage breaker? Has it ever been replaced? Does the breaker get warm/hot to the touch when the...

    Homeowner abominations

Ugh, that made my anxiety flare up. Dealing with that in my new house. The previous owner ran a disaster recovery business, and I'm pretty sure he used materials salvaged from flood or fire damaged buildings to make repairs around here and partly build the shop. Completely unboxed Romex...

Building my first garage, need ideas!

Depending on where you have the lift, you should also look into a jackshaft style garage door opener like the Liftmaster 8500. This keeps your ceiling free of the motor and opener track and gives you any extra clearance you might need.

    Vehicle Maintenance Software

I made one Excel workbook with a different tab for each vehicle that I work on. If another friend or family member starts having me do the work, I just add a new tab. It's a basic checklist for common maintenance with a notes section for other items of maintenance or repair. There's room to...

Building my first garage, need ideas!

Most standard 2 post lifts call for 4" of reinforced concrete. If you wanted to overbuild a bit, go 4" for the entire slab and then have two pockets of 6 - 8" deep in the general area you plan to have the lift.

Can I use galvanized pipe to connect my compressor pump to my air tank?

Copper dissipates heat better than steel. You might even look to see if there is an aftercooler kit available that fits your compressor.

    compressor problem

Sounds like the capacitors aren't recharging properly after discharging to help the motor start. How old is the compressor?

    Determing Reinforced Concrete

Floor level is the same height as the top of the outside footer. It appears that the concrete was poured in two phases as the lower half seems to be a slightly different color/texture as the upper part that makes the actual floor and the steel "key". This upper part is about 5". Base soil is...
