    Urrea Screwdrivers - First Impressions

I know! I think marketers think that the handle is the most important part of the screwdriver. I like sharp square profiles on my P#2 tips. As you can see virtually all of the high quality drivers have them. Then there's the Wiha on the right, and the edges of the bit are all rounded (from the...

Most tapped holes I cut are looser than I'd like...why?

Hi AP, hows it going. I've never had a problem with the strength of any thread I've cut, and no failures such as stripping threads, etc. Your post makes me think that maybe I'm complaining about normal tolerances. On the other hand, I may pick up some H1 tolerance taps with spiral points in my...

Most tapped holes I cut are looser than I'd like...why?

You mean, more options than the usual 50% and 75% engagement? Maybe I should just try one numbered size smaller on the guide drill bit and see what happens. Runout is near nil, and I use multiple taps and have the problem across several. The drill bit screwed up? Possibly. Now that I think...

Most tapped holes I cut are looser than I'd like...why?

Seems to be the same one I use from Little Machine Shop. I've noticed the Starrett wall chart is the same as the "75% thread" on the LMS chart. (I don't think I've ever used the 50% thread guide, ever, not even on steel.)

Most tapped holes I cut are looser than I'd like...why?

I have two charts that agree for drill size, one is Starrett and the other is Little Machine Shop. The drills are good quality (Precision Twist) and I have mic'd the ones I use the most, and they are the correct size. Generally I use a stub-length drill for tapping as they're more rigid. I...

Most tapped holes I cut are looser than I'd like...why?

Most of my tapped holes, regardless of which tap brand I use (most are the typical H2 or H3 clearance) give me more play than I'd like when I put in a screw. Is it my technique? I do all my tapping by hand, using the mill turned off. In other words, I drill the hole of the appropriate size...

    Urrea Screwdrivers - First Impressions

I'm posting this photo on behalf of Gort. He owns these vintage glitter-style Bet'r Grip Proto screwdrivers. I have never seen anything like these before. Pretty cool.

    Urrea Screwdrivers - First Impressions

That's how it looks, right? I agree. And it ACTS like a #1-1/2, if such a thing existed. But I actually bought a #1 Wihi in the same set and it is smaller yet. And you can see that the Wiha is plainly labeled PH2. But I definitely take your point, and agree. Many times I've wished I owned a Wiha...

    Urrea Screwdrivers - First Impressions

Other drivers would probably supply a better comparison, no? Here's a closeup of the tips. By far my worst tip is the Wiha Insulated. It cams out of virtually everything. You can see it came from the factory with rounded corners on the tip, and an extended "snout" on the tip that I think...

    Urrea Screwdrivers - First Impressions

The Urrea P#2 was in my hand all day yesterday (for locksmithing duty, which requires a lot of off-angle turning) and I'm pleased to report that the tips do NOT appear to be soft. I have a general idea of what a soft tip is like (from No-name and Cman screwdrivers) and I also own PB Swiss, Felo...

Best method of cleaning large amounts of hand tools

Previously, nobody mentioned the problem of RE-rust, caused by acid solutions. May I quote Bruce Lancaster:

Best method of cleaning large amounts of hand tools

Yes, all of the above. If you don't care about the tools, or they're beyond help from chelation, blasting works fast and leaves a decent finish if you use glass bead. Soda blasting should not hurt the tools (I don't think) and I've not tried that. Tumbling generally leaves a distressed finish...

Going All out on a set of Screwdrivers?

Sorry for confusion. Corrected. My issue is with Wiha P#2s.

Best method of cleaning large amounts of hand tools

Not in my experience. And I have a fair amount of experience. With raw steel, if you leave an item in overnight (or less, with fresh solution), it will turn dark. However this dark material buffs off. Still, the best practice is to leave the item in solution for slightly less time than you think...

Best method of cleaning large amounts of hand tools

Vinegar works but it also eats at the base metal. Any acid solution will actually remove some steel. I have striven mightily to edumacate the masses here on GJ but have failed. Even my old buddy Nealcrenshaw turns against me. Et tu, Bru-tay? Others are still using 3450 RPM wire brushes. It pains...

    Urrea Screwdrivers - First Impressions

Sure Gort, how ya doin'. Hard to forget a giant robot. Did you have the same or different name on the other site? Am I getting you confused with Evil Dr? Evil was a great guy and sold me some excellent swag. If that was you, thanks. Regards the glitter Proto drivers: Whoa! Never seen nor heard...

    Urrea Screwdrivers - First Impressions

Well--probably. I made my own set by choosing just the ones I wanted, but I doubt they'd be different otherwise. Yeah, I got mine from HD Online. Fast easy ship and they included a return label in case I wanted to return...!
