Seems to be the same one I use from Little Machine Shop. I've noticed the Starrett wall chart is the same as the "75% thread" on the LMS chart. (I don't think I've ever used the 50% thread guide, ever, not even on steel.)

Not in my experience. And I have a fair amount of experience. With raw steel, if you leave an item in overnight (or less, with fresh solution), it will turn dark. However this dark material buffs off. Still, the best practice is to leave the item in solution for slightly less time than you think...
