    Building a work bench

I have no idea how that gets to 1000#, no doubt it is solid but your typical 8ft 2x4 is about 10lbs and the pallet frames aren't going to make up that difference. Loaded up with stuff after it was done - I bet I could pile a full ton on it if it was sitting in my shop.

    One massive workbench?

I went 28in for the bench on the wall the 20in drop became the shelf underneath. I'm tall and long armed, I wouldn't want 36in against the wall. My Fab bench is just under 6ft square. You really don't work in the middle of it but the ability to layout bigger things is very handy.

Roof Trusses Built for Trolley Beam?

@Muckin_Slusher More fly's with honey.... You are getting good information here. Most PE's are not going to engineer this and illustrate it for free. Free is only one part, liability is the big one. A PE is potentially personally liable even if doing work via an employer, this is not true for...

Roof Trusses Built for Trolley Beam?

Engineering the truss for these loads is just a matter of the conversation with truss designer and letting them know where these extra point loads are going to be. Trolley is kind of limiting but they have a place. It would be easy to use a KBK type rails to create a bridge system that could be...

Garage - new pour : Body shop concrete floor anchor chain pots and side tracks etc

I suggested one option - embedded steel to the surface that can be welded to. W flange beam would be perfect.

Garage - new pour : Body shop concrete floor anchor chain pots and side tracks etc

Pull pots ****. They steal dropped fasteners, collect dirt, and are a pain to sweep around. Embedded steel at grade and weld anchors to it when needed. Cut off, grind smooth when done.

Car lift - is it worth it when you're old

If the lift keeps you more active in tinkering/maintaining the car than not having it - it is another thing that will help keep you on the right side of the grass.

Storage - pallet rack height and snowmobile lift ideas

Pallet racking is meant for Pallets. Pallets get moved with forklifts.

How would you dig a long, shallow trench along a fence?

If you are bent on doing this and If you have a skid steer - I would just make an outrigger and drag it alongside the fence and then manually clean it up. I would just solve the problem with a soil sterilizer application once a year.

2 post anchored in concrete beam

Math isn't working for the buddy with 30x50. 110yds is about double what the dimensions you said were needed for footers on a monolith slab

2 post anchored in concrete beam

Rather than limit yourself on the building, do the proper thickened edge slab required by code. At whatever size you want and your floor with consistent thickness with bar throughout and you will be much happier in the end. Don't be pennywise and pound foolish. A few extra yards of concrete and...

    Overcoming inertia

Tariff is not on the retailing price. It is on the imported price before any stateside handling and markups, make sure you don't get gouged there. Anything adding over 10% (and that is probably even high) on the retail end is going to be pure profiteering by everyone who handled it between the...

    Shop sizing conundrum

Even if you max out what you can do today with just a shell have a plan for easy/logical expansion. My Basis for this is a 20yr old shop with a 9mo old addition for dry storage. My tie in was more complicated because I didn't have a plan

Have a shop? Tell me your thoughts

Depends on local building requirements as well. You may need a shear wall at the corner. It can be engineered around but not without expense.

Beam for gable end of garage for single overhead door (converting from 2 doors)

That's not exactly the same thing, but go ahead and just start cutting I'm sure it will be fine. My truss comment is more for general information than just for the OP.

Beam for gable end of garage for single overhead door (converting from 2 doors)

Depends on if the gable end is load bearing or purely a shear wall. Odds are if it is truss roof structure the header just carries the framing above it. Roof loads should be going to the side walls.

    Door size

Not sure which way to take that from an internet stranger but I am pretty good with putting a trailer where it needs to be. I also have seen a lot of people break a lot of **** trying to park cars, trucks, trailers, boats that were not that technically challenging. That is why I will always...

    Door size

First off - who cares how hard it is to find. You buy a door once, maybe twice in a lifetime. Door is expensive no matter the size increment when you get into big doors. My door is 16w 14h. I have to basically back around a corner to get things in there so the width is really important. I also...

My First Shop Build (40x50x14) - feedback appreciated

Rather than take the walls up to 16' use scissor trusses on top of the 14' walls. It won't take too far from the wall to get that extra headroom.
