$5 tool box, some cool old tools.

I dont think it matters, Ive used both but lately been using white. Higher acid content should work a bit faster/effectively. Do NOT put black oxide coated tools in it.

    Question about older bench grinders

The older craftsman industrial grinders are pretty well regarded as well. I usually judge things by weight, how it free spins, and smell if there is no power.

    Time to sell mine

I agree, I like the design and how they are semi modular on config but all the newer ones I looked at were cheap feeling. I ended up with one from the 60's or 70's and its very stout. I did add a sheet across the back to close it off, but it certainly wasn't structural. I like the shallow depth...

    Pullers?

I find myself using 2 jaw and harmonic balancer Y pullers the most as they seem the most versatile. But my application is usually small tractor pto pullies. I find the Y puller to be very useful if you have some real estate around that you can thread into.

What first tools do you still have?

Not a tool but a box, my grandpa's, a two drawer craftsman I got when I was 9 after he passed. Still has the plaque with his name and address on the lid.

Looking for info on old Snap-on socket

Learn something everyday, thanks! I got a few P sockets and extensions from a estate of a old chrysler employee. I assumed they were impacts because they are massively thick, but it does fit if they left the assembly plant at some point. The guy had crates of drum brake cylinders as well.

    Larger sockets

Pipster is indeed correct, craftsman does funny things when the sockets get over a point and the switch to 12pt only it would seem. I found most of my big stuff at carlisle over a few years for a few bucks each.

All USA tool manufacturing going overseas?

I was merely offering my opinion with respect to the first hand exp. I have had over there, please forgive me. I'd love to see the picture link as well, some of the concepts that got to proto stage were decades ahead. In short I think Im With the majority, the odds of it ever coming back are...

All USA tool manufacturing going overseas?

The difference is the Japanese were building their own products from their own ideas, the chinese are not willing to do the same. They would rather copy another design outright because you save that R&D cost. Only time will tell if this is sustainable, but it certainly makes exporting cars...

All USA tool manufacturing going overseas?

I know VW and continental buck this, but I do see your point. It is worth noting shanghai is huge. Akin to LA or Detroit perhaps in terms of sprawl

All USA tool manufacturing going overseas?

Its crazy hw true this statement is. With that said shanghai has plenty of manufacturing, most of there auto and off-highway is HQ'd there last I checked. As for the chinese importing vehicles, think agin at the earliest that is 5 years away and even then they are basket cases. In my carrer...

Where do shop presses go to die? I have been looking for months for a used USA shop press on CL/newspaper/various business or estate sales. Do they really live that long? I can honestly say I have not seen a american shop press (<25tons) in my quest. Am I missing companies in my searching, the...

    Adjustable extractor I.D. / Usefullness

Re: Adjustable bolt extractor I.D. / Usefullness To be fair I would probably use it both ways when the bolt got rounded enough. But correctly it probably is a stud extractor. It looks very similar to the one you found rickster, do you have an opinion on it?

    Adjustable extractor I.D. / Usefullness

Saw a Cornwell bolt/stud extractor of a design I had never encountered today, but browsing their site is difficult and its not as complete as SO. On to the tool: One side was 3/8 drive, the other side had three jaws that could cam open and then the piece was run CCW it locked up onto the...
