    Underground Lair of the Squankum

Some paint today, very close to done for a while. Some of the trim around the door had been left raw long ago, some had been painted a very dark brown. I'm not going to fight the dark brown, but I'm putting my chocolatey moose brown on the raw wood. And you can see, the wall was made in...

Had a friend who needed to make a part or two for his race car, picked up a lathe in his area. An old Sears/Atlas lathe that had spent is life in a NASCAR shop, dating back to when the sport was more grassroots. My friend did all of the homework he could to learn (and to be safe) and as the...

I bought a De Walt nozzle schnozzle. Had it on my wishlist for a few years. Thought it was a just a floppy hose, I was wrong. You can set a curve to it and it holds it, which is neat. Something screws in here. Uh.... just went and looked and their short hand-sized blow gun (which I don't...

    Underground Lair of the Squankum

Now, at the end of the 5th installation of the same door the other night I looked at those washers I used as shims, and I thought, "You've spent this project mocking the hacks that came before you. Then you stacked washers as shims, a car guy hack, in the middle of a carpentry zone. Think of a...

Oh dear. I have to remind myself sometimes that the level of mechanical awareness -- and awareness of the physical world -- that we here at GJ tend to have, is often lacking in others to a degree we can't imagine. Had a coworker who was aghast when his 20-something son was picking up a car...

I guess the bright side was that he was raised in a home full of proper utility knives? Used to have an auto parts job, the teeny boppers there would use single-edge blades for mundane tasks... then leave them around the place willy nilly. Drove me nuts. How I got the metal Castrol shirt...

I, too, spent some dough at Harry Epsteins, made a big order, then realized I should have gotten something else, so a small second order.... later realized I should have gotten something for the missus, why, she'd like a 250th anniversary of America pair of pliers, right? Right? So I snagged a...

    Underground Lair of the Squankum

Could have sworn I had a few nice new paintbrushes but wasn't sure where they were hiding. Had a brand new cheap **** brush from Wal-Mart and, well, with patience, which I can do, it wasn't so hard. The next day I went to Ace and bought a nice brush. After coat #2, which went on much...

    Underground Lair of the Squankum

I think I've described how dumb the inward-swinging door was on this closet. It was hitting the concrete and needed clearancing. But that only allowed it to swing further in and hit where the new deep shelves were being built. No matter how I sliced it, it was going to have to be an "open door...

Hey, an end cabinet was how we did it in the old days! If you were a big deal and had a lot of tools, you hung that little assortment of more drawers off the end of your cab. Nowadays we just buy another cabinet or whacking huge cabinet!
