    We be chillin in TX

What size unit did you get, and what size is your garage? I'm thinking about an 18k btu unit for a 600 sq ft fully insulated garage (in Houston).

Recessed cans in carport -"Damp Location"?

For the roofed carport (no walls) area in front of my garage, I plan to add recessed can lights to the ceiling. My neighbor gave me a bunch of Halo 27ICFT 6" incandescent cans left over from his home construction. For the lenses for these lights, do I have to get wet location rated...

AC Size for Houston 26 x 24 Garage?

Thanks for the response! Confirmed my gut feel to go with an 18000 btu heat pump with inverter! I wish I had it up now...record heat index this week - and we are doing the framing/roofing.

Trying to decide on the size for a unit in my garage in Houston, TX: New build 26 x 24 garage. 10 ft ceilings. Will be fully insulated. 5 30" x 30" windows on east side 2 30" x 30" windows on south side (shaded) 2 30" x 30" windows on west side (not shaded) 1 set of 72" x 84" double...

    ants

Re: Ant Situation This is exactly what I used, and I can confirm it works great. I also got the generic liquid version ("Bifen") and used it to barrier treat the perimeter of my house every 3 months...zero bugs.

    ants

You can buy all the "pro" stuff online, legally, without a license. I got some stuff from this place: http://www.epestsolutions.com/Ants.html The products at HD and Lowe's are diluted significantly and have a short residual life.

    Concrete crack repair...suggestions?

Your hairline cracks were probably shrinkage cracks from pouring too wet a mixture. Did you do a slump test during the pour? If the cracks don't get any worse I wouldn't worry about them, as they likely have no structural ramifications.

Best spot for sub-panel? (with floorplan drawing)

Would you see a problem with location D? There will be 2 ft between the inside of the wall and the window...this keeps it on that side of the building, but puts it in a more out-of-the-way location.

Best spot for sub-panel? (with floorplan drawing)

Yeah, I finished laying the forms today and it does look like location C is the way to go. Question, can the 30" wide include space that is only available when an abutting door is closed? Since I overdosed on the windows I have gotten a bit sensitive about wall space, though I suppose I can...

Best spot for sub-panel? (with floorplan drawing)

I'm trying to determine the best location for the 100 amp subpanel in my soon-to-be-built detached garage. The garage is 26' wide x 25' deep with a 10' ceiling. I will have wood I-joists spanning the width (26'). I have a lot of windows - qty 9 30" x 30" awning windows. The bottom edge of the...

Will a heat pump work for cooling in Houston?

I'm looking at mini-splits and can't seem to get an answer on whether or not a heat pump will provide adequate (and efficient) cooling in Houston, TX in the summer, where both the average temp and average humidity are very high. I have relatives in Georgia, and they all have heat pumps for home...

    Folding/Retractable Attic Stair Options

My new garage will have a fairly large attic area, which I, of course, intend to use for storage. For retractable attic stairs, are they any better options than the standard Home Depot folding units? I had both knees replaced a few years ago and only effectively have 90 deg of bend in my knees...

    Conduit questions - detached garage

Folks - I am building a detached garage in Houston (which is under the current NEC). It will be 12 ft from the house. I am running sewer, water and gas to the new building. I plan to run 3 #2 copper and 1 #6 for the subpanel feeder. I will pull all the wire myself and then have an electrician...

Garage Door Opener for 10' ceiling (8' door)

I am currently building a new garage with a 10' ceiling. I plan to use a wooden garage door that is 18' x 8'. What are the options as far installing the tracks closer to the ceiling, i.e. at 9' instead of 8'? I've seen some openers that actuallly mount to the front wall, so you do not have to...

Your First MaxJax: What to Expect

It sounds like they are not doing a weight check on each bag of nuts, fittings, parts, etc before shipment/packaging. I implemented this process at my factory/DCs in both the China and the US and went from ~10% "missing parts" claims to 0.2% in 1 month - and have kept it at that level for 3...

Wire pull to detached garage (Houston)

Thanks guys. So, from what I understand, I would need 3 x #4 copper + 1 x #8 copper (for the ground). What insulation type should be used?

Wire pull to detached garage (Houston)

Folks - I've been lurking here for a while, getting ready to build a 26 x 26 detached garage at my house in Houston. My house is a small 100 yr old bungalow. I recently replaced all the original knob & tube wiring (!) and had a new 200 amp service panel with a new drop from the street...
