This is what I did often when I had my fab shop. If you can, bend up the long sides and just weld in the short ones. Weld up the outside and blend smooth.

I bought a VFD off Amazon for 250.00 cdn. for my 3phase 40 ton Peddinghaus ironworker. Works like a charm.
