This is almost every air compressor you will ever see. the unloader, and the check valve are not the same thing. make shure the check valve is 'checking' the flow, and that the unloader is unloading, or that the orifice is flowing.

Make sure the check valve is not leaking by. You should hear a hiss when the moter stops. if so maybe the check valve is letting air pressure leake back into the compressor, the motor starts, can't generate the torque to make it turn, and then the breaker trips. some will have a small hole...

Go for it, it's just 120V. It might bite, you but it probably wont kill you. You might damage your tools too, so be carefull with those someone might want them after your 'done'.

Check valve or reed valves, I'd look the reed valves first, #52 on your diagram. Also could be the head gaskets, feel for escaping air around heads while running. Also any leak between the pump and check valve will only show up while pumping, if the check valve is good.
