Tell me about plumbing a bathroom into an unfinished attic (pictures attached)

I'm planning to gradually finish an unfinished walk-up attic as my time and budget allow. Currently in the preliminary planning stages. What I'd like to do is go ahead and get the walls framed that are shown with red dashed lines in my floor plan drawing, but I need to preserve the ability to...

Cabinetry question (cutting holes & countertop support)

I want to cut a 12x12 hole in the side wall of the cabinet under my kitchen sink. Approximate location of the whole is the picture that has the red box outline. The other side of that side wall is my trash can drawer. My questions are: Does that side wall play a significant load bearing...

HVAC low voltage wiring (zoning) question

Two questions about the attached wiring diagram: 1) Do the two black circles identified by the red arrows (towards top of diagram) simply represent wire nuts/connectors? So each nut would have 3 wires coming out of it: 1 going to thermostat; 1 going to air handler; and 1 going to zone panel...

Question about different PVC wyes (plumbing)

I'm adding a utility sink to my garage. I need a 3 x 3 x 1.5 wye to tie into an existing 3" drain line. In terms of shape and size, both of these appear to be what I need: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Charlotte-Pipe-3-in-x-3-in-x-1-1-2-in-dia-PVC-Schedule-40-Hub-Wye-Fitting/3132805...

Electric panel question (Can a main breaker be added?)

I live in a ~10 year old house that has an Eaton electrical panel. 200 amps, 42 breaker slots. Not sure of the exact model. See attached pictures. I'm looking into home generator options, but my panel does not have a main breaker installed. Is the large square knock-out looking thing below...

Need new tubes for Mityvac 7201 oil extractor

I seem to have lost the tubes for my Mityvac 7201 oil extractor when I moved last year. Apparently Mityvac offers a tube replacement kit (MTY-822559) and an extended-length tube kit (MVA6006), but I'm having a hard time locating any reputable place to buy either kit. I see an eBay seller...

Best way to pull up subfloor to access ductwork?

I need to increase the size of some of the HVAC ductwork in the second story of my house (need to increase some supply ducts from 7" to 8"), which will require me to replace some of the register boots with larger diameter boots. The ductwork and the register boots are mostly "accessible" in a...

Sleep in house same day unfinished attic is sealed with open cell spray foam?

Not directly HVAC related, but I see a lot of insulation discussion on this forum and this seems as good a place as any to post this. I also posted this message on GreenBuildingAdvisor forums, but I'm hoping to get as much info about this as I can. I’m thinking of sealing an unfinished walk-up...

    Reducing a 6" take-off collar (supply plenum) to a 4" duct

A bathroom in my house that needs a max of only about 30 cfm of cooling (~800 btu) is fed by a 6" duct, which is probably supplying about 2x the volume of air that the bathroom actually needs. Consequently, that bathroom is always 3-5 degrees colder than my setpoint. The 6" duct is connected...

Best way to get 6.5" hole through exterior hardieplank wall?

I need to get a circular 6.5 to 7" hole through an exterior, 2x4-framed wall. From interior to exterior, the layers are drywall -> 3.5" open cell spray foam -> sheathing (not sure if OSB or plywood) -> Tyvek -> hardieplank. I recently got a ~3" hole through the same wall using a standard...

Installing digital timer switch (neutral wire required)

I want to install a digital timer switch on all of my bathroom fans. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DF75IVG/?tag=atomicindus08-20. This particular switch model requires hot, load, neutral, and ground, although apparently they make switch models that do not require a neutral...

    Mitsubishi mini-split installation observations

Last summer I posted several threads about mini splits and mini-split installation. I received very helpful replies from many of you. The mini split has been up and running for several months now, and I thought I would return and share some observations about the unit itself and the...

Any reason to keep lots of leftover vinyl plank?

I recently put down a vinyl plank floor in a small finished garage space, about 275 sq ft. I ended up with 2 full boxes and one half box left over. This is the brand of vinyl plank: https://www.lowes.com/pd/STAINMASTER-10-Piece-5-74-in-x-47-74-in-Washed-Oak-Dove-Luxury-Vinyl-Plank/999957695...

Heat pump thermostat wiring & aux (heat strips) heat

Excuse my ignorance, but can I safely and effectively disable the auxiliary electric heat (heat strips) on my heat pump merely by disconnecting the "aux" wire in my thermostat (wiring picture attached)? My thermostat is a Honeywell TH6220D and does not have the capability to disable aux within...

Another generator thread (transfer switches, portable vs. standby whole house)

I read through the other generator thread and have some questions for the collective wisdom of the forum. 1) Can somebody briefly explain a "Service Disconnect" vs a "Load Center" style transfer switch? I see some that are referred to as "Service Disconnect" switches, such as this one...

My PVC furnace exhaust vent pipe is clogged with... rocks?

Bought a new house this summer. It has a 92% AFUE furnace (I think) with PVC intake/exhaust. Thankfully, I have not yet needed to turn on the heat. I somehow noticed the other day that the furnace exhaust vent pipe seems to have been stuffed full of rocks?? See attached pictures. There is a...

Easiest way to air seal unused garage door?

I will (probably) not be using this garage door for a few years, and possibly a few decades. The space inside is heated and cooled, and I spend a lot of time in there, so I want to air seal it as well as I reasonably can. I don't want to get rid of the garage door or build an interior wall...

Is this a water drain in my crawl space?

Moved into a new house recently. Crawl space is sealed. And I found this drain in a rear corner of the crawl space near the entry door. See pictures. Is that just a water drain in case the crawl space floods? If I were to put a dehumidifier in my crawl space, could I just direct the drain...

Two (more) Mitsubishi mini split questions

Thanks for all the help so far. Two more hopefully easy questions. 1) Did I wire the indoor unit correctly? See attached pictures. I stripped the wires by the length the installation manual specified, but it seems like it should have been shorter? Also, for ground, I literally just wrapped it...

Using adhesive to mount line hide?

Anybody ever use adhesive to mount line hide, rather than screwing it into your siding? Line hide is pretty light weight plastic, right? Any idea what adhesive would work? Would mastic tape work, or would it not stick to siding?
