Garage build - Modern, Shed Roof, Rain Screen Siding

This has been one of most entertaining parts of the process. Part of the reason we ended up doing the steel roof and rain screen siding ourselves was that we couldn't find a garage specialist contractor that would want to touch it. Not that I blame them at all. If my bread and butter was...

The Minerit seems pretty tough. The screwed up edge there is from the bottom panel on the pallet, the strapping caught it. There is one more spot on that edge, otherwise it's all in good shape. We'll see how the cutting goes, I'm hoping it holds up. It's fastened with stainless button head...

Thanks. I hope it continues to turn out well. Here's a shot of the Minerit panels, on the left. They're 4x8 sheets, about 5/16 thick. They're very smooth, sort of cool to the touch. If you look really close in the right light you can just see a tiny bit of the glass fiber fuzz. It's really...

Thanks lupinsea. If anyone knows about sweating the small stuff it's you. Throughout the project we've been striving for a certain honesty of materials and construction, if that makes any sense. Let the function drive the material selection, and then don't try to hide what they are made of...

Thanks. It's a Brazillian hardwood, it's also called Brazillian Walnut and Ironwood among others. It's super dense (doesn't float) and really hard, often you'll see it used for decks and boardwalks. It's also very weather resistant, similar to teak but less expensive.

The most satisfying part so far, the ipe. Here it is again, as it came. Here it is with a coat of oil. We're using Penofin Exterior Hardwood http://www.penofin.com/products_exotichardwood.shtml I thank 993James993 for pointing in the right direction. I figured if their product was good...

Garage build - Modern, Shed Roof, Rain Screen Siding

Progress has been slow over the past few weeks, but we're finally getting somewhere. First up is some more of the blocking details. We closed out the lower section on the yard side completely. Across the front, we closed out the sections between the pairs of rafter tails. Next up is the...

Garage build - Modern, Shed Roof, Rain Screen Siding

Some progress over the past week. Things are slowing down as we're doing most of the rest on our own. Got some furring strips up for the two walls that will get the ipe. Asked for black paint at the Home Debit, ended up with something from the Disney line. That's Mouse Ear Black folks. The...

Felt A little more progress. Got the felt on, and started on the exposed eaves. We're using the Penofin Red Label oil with the cedar tint. We wanted a little bit of color, while staying somewhat honest to the underlying wood. Mainly just trying to protect it and keep it from graying too...

Steel Roof Put on the roof last weekend. It's the hidden fastener stuff from Menards. Came cut to length, each section is roughly 16" wide. Very easy to install. With no previous experience, two people could probably do it in a day. Working slowly we did it in two. Of course the 2/12 shed roof...

Not a bad idea. It's spaced to hit the seams in the roof sheathing, and an extra in between. 24 OC. We probably could've gone that route too. Good input. We'll see how it feels. Yeah just on the garage door wall. Everything else is a more normal schedule. Thanks for the insight on the...

More Framing Blocking under the eaves coming together, and fascia partially in place. Color matched yellow dog. Who knew he was lumber colored? Garage Journal challenge time. Can somebody explain how the string is used? It runs down the top plate of the rake, across the back wall and...

Technical framing discussion... bring it on I say. Remember, we didn't draw the plans, so no offense taken. I have a theory about internet forums: The best discussions happen on topics that are not the main focus of the forum. If you want to have meaningful discussion about wine, go to a...

Garage build - Modern, Shed Roof, Rain Screen Siding

We'll have a pretty substantial gutter in place, and honestly I don't mind the cleaning. It's only 9-10 ft, I can reach from a step ladder. Or get on the relatively flat roof without a problem. Besides, all I'll be cleaning out is acorns and oak leaves from the neighbors tree. :) Not to mention...

Hi Dave. I'm not a carpenter but I'm trying hard to learn some of the vocabulary. I'll get a photo of the front wall as they framed it up, I don't think I have a clear one posted. On the front wall, I don't know what to call the parts.

Thanks. We're pretty pleased so far. On finishing the inside, there's several factors. We'd like to take advantage of the energy tax incentives, which will require insulating the walls. With the 30% back on the roof, OHD, man door and insulation it should basically allow us to do it "for free"...

Framing - Day 7 Really coming together now. All rafters in place, sheathing held back for the clearstory on the yard side. Those two walls will be sided in ipe below the Polygal type stuff above. The clearstory from the inside:

Hi Lupinsea. We're screwing into the furring with large pan head screws provided with the siding. With the predrilled holes and the pan heads, I think the idea is to allow for some float. We're leaving the panels unpainted. What fiber cement product did you decide on? Apologies if you covered...

Hi Lupinsea. I've been following your build thread too, it's very impressive. Your attention to detail goes far beyond what we're doing here. If we were doing the work ourselves so far we might be sweating the fine details in a similar manner, but since it's slightly out of our hands it's a lot...
