    Safety glasses

I've had a painful strain on the back quarters of my head after putting glasses on. But this is only occassionally. Found if I take them off for a minute, then back on a time or two, I apparently adjust as the pain is no longer there. BTW, my eyes are great at distance but blurry up close. I...

"Golden Age" for Wilton or Reed vises? Or years/models to avoid?

Dang, I just picked up my first old USA built vice and feel even better about it after reading the lengthy posts above. I wasn't after a particular brand, just whatever medium-duty vintage USA vise in decent shape I happened to stumble upon for a good deal. The first two contacts didn't work...

Vice Resto Paint Holding Up to Chipping, Chemicals, Etc.

Thanks for the heads up Outlaw. Gassy turkey no good! LLP: Used POR15 on a trailer rebuild last year. So far-so good! Surface prep is everything. I like your idea of using it as a base coat for it's adhesion properties. I may do just that since I still have an unopened pint laying around...

Vice Resto Paint Holding Up to Chipping, Chemicals, Etc.

Great idea Bruce! Does it matter how long to wait after painting to put it in the oven? Obviously not wet but before it fully cures...or can it be done anytime after?

    Vise - Old or New

Only buy NEW. That way one of our kids can pick up a nice vintage 2014 USA vice on the cheap in about 40 years! :D Course there's that inflation thing...

    Scored a Canedy-Otto Royal 18...

Nice find Coop! What are the odds you and Outlaw scored similar presses days apart? Anyway, it will be good to have another partner in crime if both go through a resto process.

Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vise!

Re: Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vice! I started to use it as the press but couldn't get enough oomph on it to pop the joints free. Suprised it didn't work but didn't want to resort to adding a pipe over the vice handle for extra leverage either. Ended up using essentially a beefy c-clamp...

Outlaw's Canedy Otto Royal 18 Drill Press

Very nice Outlaw! Great write-up too. Looking forward to seeing the restoration process :)

Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vise!

Re: Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vice! I didn't waste anytime putting the Reed to good use. The vise came in very handy while replacing u-joints this weekend. Even got to use the pipe jaws to hold the driveshaft. While no cake walk, must say having a larger vice made the job much easier :)

Vice Resto Paint Holding Up to Chipping, Chemicals, Etc.

I do like the natural look very much. Oxidation wouldn't be an issue in my case either as the Reed 2C is mounted in a dry basement workshop now. This guy on Ebay does a nice job with his display pics. I'm assuming it's a sandblast finish though wonder about the black accents.

Vice Resto Paint Holding Up to Chipping, Chemicals, Etc.

I've seen some really nice vice restoration pics on this forum. How is the paint you used held up over time? Did you just use standard spray paint or something fancy like powdercoat? I understand alot depends on prep work. However, vices can see alot of harsh physical and even chemical...

    Borrowing tools at the shop...

Buying the guy gift cards, lunch and beer in return is certainly a nice gesture but could also take that same money and buy a few cheap tools that you're having to borrow regularly.

Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vise!

Re: Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vice! Any particular reason the Reed combo's are your favorites?

Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vise!

Re: Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vice! Man, I hope not...though must admit enjoy the looking for a diamond in the ruff stuff. Come to think of it, I could use a smaller vise to compliment this monstrosity...

Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vise!

Re: Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vice! Thanks again guys. I've noticed this "suckage" term is somewhat prevalent on this forum. First saw it a CL-Score-You-**** thread or something like that. It seems to be used in an endearing sense...I think when someone does well. You all have...

Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vise!

Re: Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vice! Thanks guys. Yes, it is fully intact. Jaws are probably half worn. Swivels freely and the swivel rods are straight. It opens and closes without binding. Relative to the "fever"; I've been looking through some of the resto threads here so "the...

Scored My First Old U.S. Made Vise!

A few of you know I've been looking for a relatively heavy-duty U.S.-made vice. Came across a CL listing today for a storage facility sale from 3-5 today only. One of the pics was a top view of a large vise sitting in the corner. Hmmm. Called the guy and he said it was U.S. made. Double...
