Is Lowes going to take on Craftsman?

unfortunately, yes. craftsman will always be around, but it'll be like schwinn bicycles. the old, made-in-usa schwinn bikes are sought after, while the new overseas junk is sold cheap at the discount stores.

    Roku ??

love my roku box. i have the $29 express (not express+) box & laid it on my tv stand. works great! if you want to stream 4K material, you'll need to get one of the nicer ones, but my data cap won't allow me to stream much 4K. my broadband speed is 5MB down/1MB up & don't have any problems...

    Freezer For The Garage

chest freezers (unless they've made changes) are the most efficient freezer design. i had an upright freezer in my garage & it ran ALL THE TIME in the summer, & TX would be worse for heat. you could see the frosty cold air pour out of it when you opened it in the summer. plus, unless you get...

    Security Cameras

$900 is about 2x as much as i'd like to spend. aside from installation simplicity, does POE offer any other advantages? does samsung make decent systems?: https://www.samsclub.com/sams/samsung-16ch-1080p-16x10/prod18983443.ip?xid=plp:product:1:1

    Asbestos Popcorn Ceiling Options?

agreed, but (iirc) since he's the homeowner, he can do the "abatement" himself w/out running afoul of the authorities. like another poster mentioned, try a small test area to see if it's easily removed. if so, i'd get a good respirator, get the ceiling moist, then have at it. really shouldn't...

    Non Name-Brand LED Bulbs

i've had decent luck with the off-brand led's from menards; they had a sale on the recessed-type lightbulbs, 4 for $9 - can't remember the brand. i bought 19 of them & haven't lost one. i think the walmart brand led's are gtg & pretty reasonable.

Framing Experts - How would you handle this?

probably not what you want to hear, but i'd make that into a storage area that at least lines up with the first cement bump-out wall in the back of the pics. that way, you'll always have access to it & have a lot of storage. i'm guessing a soffit would hang down pretty low. what's the height...

What to do when a builder deviates from house plans

happened to a buddy of mine too. the garage entry door is ~5' off the ground & he has ~6 steps to climb. the stairs with rails take up a lot of floor space! in his case, it was a combination of the trusses sitting on top of the foundation (vs hanging from the foundation) & his...

    selling home, requested repairs

that would be my concern too. you can't easily ground anything when your whole electrical system is dated to 1945. 2-prong outlets aren't easily found at most home-centers, so people just replace them w/ 3 prong ones & forget about it. does a gfci outlet do much w/out a ground?

Fed Up with lazy no show contractors

damn - that's pretty good & sounds entirely reasonable! i think a lot of them work hand to mouth too. when they're hungry, they're busy.

    Cannon Gun Safes From Costco

sounds like the OP has a ~$500 budget, so 7ga safes are out of the question. i'd say buy it. costco will stand behind it & it'll keep all but the most determined bad guys out. someone with a grinder will eat through a $5K safe too, it'll just take them longer. :lol_hitti

Fed Up with lazy no show contractors

LOL - & that's the problem with the trades. most lowly homeowners work in businesses where ignoring "PITA" customers or potential customers would get them in some serious trouble.

Fed Up with lazy no show contractors

same, at least on the doing all i can myself part. it's easier for me to do it myself than to find a non-screwball contractor who will show up & give me a bid, then actually follow-up & do decent work. if you have a neighborhood website, become a member & use that for recommendations & who to...

    hf free flashlights

amateur. :lol_hitti r&r those batteries that come with those flashlights though. in my experience, a lot of them eventually leak & will corrode the terminals.

    Tamper Resistant Receptacles

not a huge fan either, but the outlets loosen up with use. wouldn't the gfic/arc fault be sufficient & make tamper-resistant outlets unnecessary?

Questions regarding the Harbor Freight 44" box for those that own them

happened to me too, only they flat out said i can't buy it because the forklift operator was gone. had to come back the next day. edit - i'd pull the trigger @ $349. call them first & see if they have any in stock. when i bought mine, they said they get ~3/week and are sold within a few days.

    R&R Porcelain Light Socket Problems

thanks guys. i wouldn't think it'd matter if the LED bulb wasn't secured to the socket, but i'll give it a whirl. i'm obviously not very experienced with electrical work. the light fixture that could be "bad" had more wires in the box than the remaining fixtures. i'm guessing that means...

    R&R Porcelain Light Socket Problems

So I bought some swanky LED shop lights at Menards during Black Friday weekend to brighten up the garage. They shop lights had plugs, so I needed to swap out the porcelain fixtures that included a bulb with one that had a pull-chain & outlet. So I r&r'd all 4 fixtures & turned on the lights...

    HVAC Screwing

pretty much this. this is the opposite of capitalism. OP wants to buy a part, but can't due to some kind of government/trade-oriented restriction. he's forced to use someone with a license to buy & install it.

    HVAC Screwing

i did the same. i removed the draft motor (involved removing 3 nuts & a disconnecting a wire harness). not one local place would sell to me w/out a HVAC license. had to call a HVAC guy, who charged me $125 for the part & $125 for the labor - he was in my house for 15 minutes. took him almost...
