Vehicle Oil Changes: Are you a DIY'er?

agreed. most of my friends don't change their own oil, & i don't begrudge them for it, but it's more of a necessity here on GARAGE journal. if you don't change your own oil, can you at least lie about it here?

Vehicle Oil Changes: Are you a DIY'er?

i do mine. even w/ a jack/jackstands/creeper, it's a <30 minute job that costs me ~$15 for oil & filter. plus, i'll add washer fluid & do a quick check of other things while i'm under there. don't have to schedule an appt, don't have to wait in line, don't have to deal with any upselling, &...

For those that swear by their HF Freebie Multimeters

so a free HF multimeter doesn't do well in a torture test? interesting.

    How to secure foundation insulation?

i'm going to test the liquid nails subfloor adhesive (LN902) tonight. it's rated for exterior AND foamboard use. looked at the PL400, but it was $8/10oz tube (ouch), while the LN902 comes in both 10oz & 28(?) oz tubes.

Replacing missing tabs on roof 3 tab shingles..

^this. in some respects, it might be better since it's cool out; it's easy to damage shingles on hot/sunny days. you'll want to get a heavy-duty/thick putty knife & gently separate the damaged shingle from the layer above & below it. then take a prybar to remove the nails & pull up the bad...

    Furnance blower wheel replacement

the draft blower pooped the bed in my old furnace. i disconnected the wire harness & the 3 bolts that held it to the furnace, then started calling around to buy the part. no one would sell me the draft blower, as i didn't have a hvac license; had to go through licensed tech, who charged me...

    How to secure foundation insulation?

i'm doing something similar. foam insulation on basement walls. got a few reviews on this loctite foamboard glue that aren't very good (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Loctite-PL300-10-fl-oz-Foamboard-VOC-Adhesive-1421941/202020476). so i tried putting some liquid nails on the foamboard to test it...

    TV in the work shop?

I like having a tv out there. It’s just an old 19" crt tv that needs an antenna, but i get good reception & ~15 local channels. A small tv is great - they don't take up much room & you can mount them on a shelf to keep them out of the way. on a sidenote, I was walking around the hood a few...

Opinions on Larin 2 ton Engine hoist?

i've had the 2-ton fold-able one for ~10 years too. no issues, but i don't use it a whole lot either. have had a fully-dressed BB chrysler & 727 trans on it a few times & moved engines in/out a few times as well. i'd get the fold-able one for sure. takes up much less space.

iirc, the owens corning oakridge shingles were rated as a best buy from consumer reports a few years back.

Choosing Between Oriented Strandboard and Plywood

yep, which is fine w/ me. plywood is better, but the price-premium isn't worth it. i've seen a few higher-end houses use advantech, but just for flooring. the wall/roof sheathing have all been osb.

Opinions on studding basement wall that's already insulated?

no way i'd use those hanging bats behind my studwall; talk about moisture sponges. tear that stuff out & use rigid foam insulation glued to the wall & a studwall in front of it. you're also not supposed to use vapor barriers in basements.

    Need some Roofing Advice

check out the BBB before going w/ guy #2, but it's a no-brainer if he checks out. i roofed my own place ~5 years ago because the bids i was receiving were laughable. could get an extra one if you're curious, but 1600 sq feet, plus osb, plus 2 layer tear off for $7500 isn't a bad bid. if...

People parking in front of house

what are they doing that bothers you (parking on your grass, dumping trash, being loud, etc)? if they were simply parking in front of my house, i couldn't care less. plus, it'd make it look like someone was home (when i may not be) & deter thieves.

    Thoughts on Expensive House Paint?

check consumer reports for reviews on paint. some $30/gallon stuff handily outperforms the $50+/gallon. i think the ace kensington brand interior & exterior paints are best buys right now & are ~$30/gallon.
