Has anyone ever written a "primer" thread?

Hi. Been here almost ten years, bought some nice tools from some people here, still using them, thanks, et cetera. After a decade of a leaky-roofed undersized garage with mismatched cabinets and bad lighting, I am two years away from building a big (4-6 car) garage with a lofted second floor...

    Recommend an Allen Key set?

Look, everyone makes one. I have a drawer full of them. They're rusty, disorganized, stripped, whatever. I want to put an end to this once and for all. Best value for the money (Europe, good Taiwanese, American, whatever). Lots of sizes, color coded, metric and SAE, probably ball-tipped...

Spraying solvent on a lot of brick and stone

I have a lot of water intrusion and I suspect the brick and stone exterior is the culprit. My research leads me to believe that I am best off traveling a few states away and getting the good stuff (solvent based silane-siloxane breathable water repellent). The problem, then, is how to apply...

Teach a man to shop: Plumbing Edition

This really shouldn't be that hard. I have a 1/2 FPT outlet with a broken (hose bibb/sill ****/boiler drain/ garden valve). I want to install an American-made full-port ball valve (you know, a quarter turn thingy) with a bog-standard MGHT outlet on the other side. For less than $30, maybe...

Removing broken bolts from trench drain

So I know every forum (GJ included) has done this question about a billion times but I am not having an easy go of it. Around my garage is a trench drain, and the previous owner at one point managed to break off no fewer than six of the grate-retaining bolts, and lose a bunch of the hardware...

Who makes full flow garden hose quick disconnects

Question says it all. The hardware store and internet lines all appear to reduce the bottleneck interior diameter a lot. Brass is preferred. So is "inexpensive," as I would like to refit 5-6 hoses and attachments. Ideas?

Please recommend me an indoor cable locator

I have four or five (low voltage/speaker) wires in my old house and I can only find one end. The other ends are almost certainly behind plaster or (perhaps) drywall (some went in a walls and a ceiling, I think, and were later plastered over). I can trace some of them through the crawlspace but...

I need a lot of dry. A bit of heat and cool would be nice.

Hi. We're pretty new homeowners in Connecticut (so money's a bit tight already) and I think we need to do something about our garage. It gets way, way too humid and we should probably investigate some heating and cooling alternatives while we're at it. Current use: parking two cars, and also a...

Ernst wrench rails: one piece or two?

Simple question, I guess. Can anyone vouch for the usefulness of one over the other? I can see why the two-piece unit would be more customizable but are there any drawbacks in terms of stability? And do the magnetic ones work okay with a drawer liner? Have seen conflicting answers.
