    Small Room Climate Control

I need to house electronic equipment (Radios) in an insulated 8X10 ft. shed. Any suggestions on heating and cooling this small of an area? I would like to use a thermostat for around the clock year around temperature control. I'm looking for an efficient way of doing this. The smallest...

    Sub Panel Yes or No?

I have a new room addition at the back of my house. I need to add two 20 amp circuits and one 240v 10 amp circuit. My breaker box is in the garage at the opposite end of the house. I have room in the box for the additional circuits but I would have to run at least 60 feet of wire in the attic to...

    Trim Nailer Compressors

There are a variety of trim compressors available. What would be a good tank size? I've seen several with very small tanks that would seem to recycle after just a few shots.

    Question for Insulation Experts

I framed in a back porch. It has been sheathed, house wrapped, and vinyl sided. The walls are 2X4 studs and I'm going to insulate them using Roxul comfort batt mineral wool insulation. The batts are unfaced, should I use a vapor barrier with this type of insulation? I've heard that I should not.

I want to put up tongue and groove paneling and then some window trim. Which finish nailer would be the better choice, an angled or straight nailer?

    Framing for a PTAC

I have a 12 X 14 room that I want to heat and cool, a slab floor, typical 4 inch insulated wall and windows on 3 sides. The local hvac salesmen are pushing a mini-split but I think a 7000 BTU PTAC is more suited. I know I have to frame in for a sleeve, but what would be a recommended height...

    Green Hinge System

I'm replacing the trim around my garage door. I'm thinking of ordering the Green Hinges. For those of you that have used them how well do they work for you? Have they made enough of a difference that you would recommend them? What do you like or dislike about them?

    Tooling Caulk

After reading the post about caulk I came up with a question about tooling it. The caulk I've always used I've taped off and used my finger dipped in dish soap to smooth it out and remove the excess. If I use a polyurethane caulk should I use mineral spirits instead of dish soap for a nice...

    Fascia Covering

I want to cover my old wooden fascia with aluminum. When a contractor came out for estimates he gave me a choice of either using the preformed fascia or he could form it out of trim coil so I wouldn't have the ridges in it and it would be smooth. I asked him how thick the trim coil would be...

    Soffit Material

I have soffits that are 3/8 plywood that I want to cover. The two choices are aluminum and vinyl. The fascia will be aluminum. Ignoring the price difference which material do you think would be the best choice, and why?

Is the Black & Decker complete guide to wiring a good reference book? The 6th edition is supposed to be up to the latest codes.

    Should I take the risk?

I have a hard choice to make. In order to put a shop in my backyard part of the slab would have to be poured over my sewer line. It's the line that runs from my house to the city sewer. It was put down in the mid 50's and is clay tile. I had the location marked out and a camera run through the...

I think it would be a good idea to add a forum dedicated to garage doors.

    Buried Natural Gas Line Question

Before I go too far in planning I need to know if a gas line can be buried under a concrete driveway. It's the only option I would have for NG heat and I need a new driveway anyway.

    Foundation Options WWYD and Why?

I want to do a new build on a small shop building. The primary use would be a hobby shop for woodworking and other small projects. I'm located about 500 feet from a river on the high bank side so there is no danger of flooding. Because of the river the ground is mostly clay and silt. The topsoil...

    I want a Workshop

Hello All, I retired last March and wouild like to build a workshop By most standards it will be quite small, but I have to work with what I've got. It will be a 16 X 24 garage bay with a 16 X 16 el on the side. Zoning restricts the height to 15 ft. above grade so no lift. My first decision...

    Infrared Heat

Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with a gas fired infrared heater? This would be for a new build and not a retrofit. I understand the initial cost is quite high.
