    Identify this Japanese tool?

Picked this up at a flea market in Tokyo... looks vintage, probably hand made. Has some faint markings on it that I cannot read. Double blades, maybe for scoring the work piece?

Vintage steel shelf unit - easy refinish?

Scored this awesome vintage metal shelf unit. I actually like the original look, but the crusty shelves might be a problem. I'd be tempted to matte clear coat it, but I don't think that would work... I'm not interested in making this a big project. I'm thinking pressure wash, dry and wipe it...

best motion sensing outdoor flood light?

My motion sensing flood light has been failing and it's time for a new one. I think this one lasted about 8 years. IMO, a fixture should last way more than 8 years. Yeah, I know the sensor is sensitive... but I still would like it to last longer. If you look closely at the sensor in the picture...

hex bit sockets with with "flank drive"

I recently bought a set of Wera metric L hex keys. They have some kind of "hex-plus" shape that avoids driving the corners of the screw head's inside hex socket. Man, I like these things! They actually seem less prone to getting stuck in a deforming bolt head (as my standard hex sockets...

    Odd size closed-end wrench set

I just got an e-bike and I want to carry a lightweight toolkit with me on rides. Strangely, all the bolts/nuts are odd sizes: 13, 15, 17 and 19mm. I'd love to find a set of double ended closed or box wrenches... for example: one with 13mm and 15mm on opposite ends, and another with 17mm and 19mm...

Workmate as Motorcycle Tire Changing Stand

For some reason, after years of using a milk crate, I finally realized my Workmate might make a good tire changing stand... I have a vintage Workmate 79-001 Type 2 (WM625) with replaced jaws. I bought a 12" long piece of 1/2" stainless steel round bar, and I filed a small V in one side of the...

Chamberlain / Liftmaster ruining home automation.

Chamberlain / Liftmaster has been removing home automation features and putting advertising on their apps. I have 4 of their openers and none of my efforts to set them up in my home automation system work anymore...

    which circuit is which?

This isnt really a garage question but I love this forum so I'm trying here. ;-) Not sure of the terminology here, but here is what I see: I have : 1) In the attic is an "HVAC unit"that has a blower gas heating element and a cooling coil. 2) Outside the house is a big ground mounted Condenser...

    Paint conduit on the roof?

Just had solar installed. There are two spots of exposed conduit on my roof installation. One is where the conduit come up through the roof to the array (about a couple inches exposed and some flashing) and another between two sections of the array (about 4 feet long). Should I paint this...

Seal the bottom corners of the garage door? Keep crawling bugs out?

Whats the best way to seal the bottom corners of the garage door? I'm getting some roaches sneaking in overnight (city life, ugh.) The bottom seal of the door is good. But the darn bugs can sneak in under the fascia boards and then around the end of the door. Is my seal done improperly?

Folding Wood Ruler / Measure : Royal Eagle X-672

Found this Royal Eagle X-672 at an antique store and bought it. I assume these are from the time before metal tape measures? I think my Dad had one and they are cool, and that is all I know... It has this interesting metal extension part... how was this used and what for?

    convert large pictures

I regularly have trouble uploading large photos and then remember I have to shrink them for this forum. I am pretty sure XenForo can be configured to automatically resize uploaded images... At least, I don't have this problem with another XenForo forum I frequent. ;-)

    Really Strong Wall Mount?

I want to hang a piece of exercise equipment, a "Stroop Spine", to the inside wall of the garage. This thing is basically a vertical pipe that mounts to the wall and you attach straps to it to do exercises that involve pulling against the wall. The thing itself is heavy, maybe 60 pounds, and...

    Paint bubbling

The front door sill on our 100 year old building is on a shaded porch. It has been well sanded, primed and painted multiple times over the last 5 years. Last time it was painted was by professional in April... it immediately bubbled up days later. They came back and well sanded, primed and...

    BSP thread expert help please?

On my truck, it's possible to submerge the rear axle when off-roading. To prevent water entering the differential, it is recommended to replace the rear differential breather with a barbed fitting and to run a hose to a point higher on the truck. So I took the rear differential breather out of...

max torque on 3/8" square drive tools?

I just broke a 3/8" drive socket extension. I was torquing wheel lug nuts to 98 lb-ft (133Nm). I was using a 1/2" drive torque wrench but as I only have 3/8" drive sockets I was using an adapter down to the 3/8" extension. I had noticed a bit of twist happening and then on about the 10th lug...

    Roof Rack Crossbar Nuts Spinning

I went to move my Nissan Xterra roof rack crossbars to a better position and the nuts on the bottom are spinning. These bolts squeeze the plastic clamp to hold it onto the side bars. The nuts are round inserts in the plastic bottom of the clamp. I can try and drill out the torx bolt head... but...

    Paint Removal from Parts

I just took the very old flagpole mount off of our 100 year old house. Lots of paint layers on this, some certainly lead based. The screws rusted off in the wood! So... whats the easiest way to strip the paint off of this? Is there something I can soak it in? I don't have easy access to a...
