Punch and chisel sets - Snap On vs Matco, etc.

I have been looking at building out my punch and chisel set. Originally I thought the Snap On and Matco ones were all rebranded Mayhew, so I bought the Matco 25 piece set when it was on sale. Looking at Matco punches and chisels, they LOOK similar to Snap On ones. The stamping looks identical...

Who makes Snap On shop presses?

Like this 50 ton: https://store.snapon.com/50-ton-Floor-Presses-Press-Floor-Hydraulic-50-ton-1-stage-Pump-P636446.aspx I have no interest in buying one, but sometimes its interesting to see as you shop around.

Who makes the best 5 gallon pail pumper?

I am looking for a new 5 gallon pail pumper. Currently I have a hand pump unit that I use on gear oil pails to fill differentials. But it leaks out the top and has for just about its entire life. It was on that I think I got at Big R about 15 years ago. I tired of keeping a pile of rags on...

Snap On vs Matco hex bit sockets?

Are the Matco hex bit sockets any good? How do they hold up vs Snap On? I know the Snap On ones like to twist. Matco: https://www.matcotools.com/catalog/product/SBXYM10R/3-8-DRIVE-10-PIECE-METRIC-HEX-BIT-DRIVER-SET/ Snap On...

What's the maximum size folks are using for 3/8" impact sockets?

I am seeing sets from Snap On / Matco, etc up to 22-24mm / 1". Honestly using a MG325 I can't see using more than 19mm / 3/4". Maybe if I had one of those 600 ft-lb 3/8" guns the larger sizes come into play?

Check out these Matco impact sockets, not quite the off centered HF ones but...

Picture #1. Broached all the way down. Picture #2. An insert to break the broach. Picture #3. A "good" impact socket. I got Matco hardline (NOT their ADV) 10-36mm 1/2" deeps today. I didn't realize it right away but many had full depth broach and two had an "insert" to make it a shallow...

    Larger size 3/8" impact sockets?

For 3/8" impacts, I see sets that go up to 1" and 24 mm. I wonder how many of you use the larger sizes? To me that's usually suspension and I'm reaching for my 1/2" gun by default. I would think up to 19mm, and up to 3/4" would be fine for 3/8" impact sets. What does the collective wisdom of...

In your toolbox, do you put your sockets drive end up or fastener end up?

Haven't seen a thread like this, just wondering how everybody does it and any nuances to how they do it? Most of the time I see folks with fastener side up, but most brands put the size down by the drive end. I see some folks do it both ways. If Snap On is your go to, then the socket sizes...

Chrome swivels - Snap On, MAC, and Matco

Snap On's newer chrome swivels don't have any visible pins. Matco appears to have a press pinned design, but used to have screws holding the swivel together. MAC looks like the old Matco's did, with the screws. The advantage of the screw design seems to be when they get loose you can take...

Snap On impact sockets - are they "really" too soft?

Hey all, I have seen a bunch of threads where people say that Snap On impacts are too soft & that the drive end wears quickly and in some cases both ends. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39390 http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=333332...

Using only impact or power sockets with air ratchets

I recently got a Snap On cordless air ratchet for Christmas and noticed in the manual it says to use only impact or power sockets. I thought it was interesting because I've never seen a pro mechanic specifically use impact or power sockets with an air impact (regular, not impacting/reactionless...
