    HF threads vs everyone else...

I have a HF tire inflator set up for presta valves on mountain /road bikes and the gage was never even close to working correctly. I found a digital gage on Zoro with a 1/8npt thread and measured what I could on the HF POS. I thought 1/8"npt was it. I wrapped the new gage with some Teflon tape...

SPI or Fowler... Discuss amongst yourselfs

I'm looking at getting a co-axial centering indicator for work. They range from $100 to $900. I'm not interested in spending a lot since it's my money and the place I work won't buy one. I found those 2 around $250-280ish. They look identical too. Any thoughts are welcome...

    Threading questions

I'm familiar with tapping, but what's it called when using a die? Dieing? Tapping? Or just threading? Curious... Second, what's the way you're supposed to thread a rod with a die? Aligning it is nearly impossible. I do have access to a small lathe and Bridgeport. I'm trying to thread the...

    Schrader valve, tap drill size

I have a schrader valve tap coming in this week. But I need the drill size for it. Google doesn't seem to be much help. Any info would be greatly helpful. Thanks, Larry Fwiw, this is for a tool to make working on bike shocks easier.

    Micrometers. Can you ID them?

About 14 years ago when I started working in a metal shop for the first time, I had to purchase some of my own tools. I ordered an 8" Fowler caliper, but a guy that had his own shop gave me 3 mics of his. He told me that he goes to the flea market and looks for used tools. He then pulled out of...

    Lowes Blows!

I have a 16' Kobalt tape that I bought from them probably about 2 years ago. I liked the magnetic tip since I thread pipes. The tip will hold steady while I measure 5-10' pipes and rods. Well, the tip broke off and the tape is wound inside. I take it back and I'm told to go grab a new one. But...

    Breaking up old concrete?

What did they use in that stuff back then? I have a 16x16" piece with the remnants of a flag pole in it. I tried a 5lb hammer and stone chisel and it didn't even break the dust loose after 5 blows. I borrowed my buddy's 35lb Bosch jack hammer and only got 4" down in an hour! I was using a point...

    Broken lever on C'man ratchet

Does anyone know if there's a part# for this or where I can get one? It's a C'man 3/8 drive ratchet and the lever broke on it a while ago. There's no Sears around here anymore.

    Propane torch question.

I bought one at HD for $25 that has an ignition built into it and it screws onto the tank. On the back of the handle is the on/off valve. It's in the basement and I'm the only one down there. Should I take the torch off every time? There's only one thing that makes me feel like puking. The smell...

    Small pegboard storage bins

A couple years ago I bought a 1/4" pegboard kit off of Amazon and it came with 2-3 yellow bins (3x4" maybe). They actually go into the standard pegboard holes, unlike the hf ones. I checked Uline and other places but can't seem to find them. Anyone have any info? Thanks, Fahn

    Baldor 623e or 662?

For Christmas I wanted the Baldor 623e. It's USA made and .33hp w/6" wheels and cast toll rest. Just looking on their site though, I found the 662 and it has the same specs with one exception - the weight. The 623e is 47lbs where the 662 is 29lbs. Is the 623e worth the extra $100+? What am I...

Huge vices- are they worth more or less?

BLast night my dad came over our house and I invited him down the basement to see how I modified his old work bench. I mounted up the Yost that I just bought and figured he'd like to see it. As we're talking about the vice he mentions that there's one in his brothers basement that "was old when...

    Vice psi questions?

I just bought a new Yost 865-di vice for several reasons. One being that it's made in the USA. While doing research on vices, a lot of them are 30,000 psi, where this one is 65,000 psi ductile iron (hence the "di" in the model#). What's the difference/significance of this? Will it be stronger...

    Bicycle mechanic from the Northeast!

Hey, I'm Larry. I do cnc work full time and on the side I've done bike mechanics for 18 years. Anything from building the bike from frame up, rebuilding Fox suspension to tune-ups. I ride DH and Enduro mostly, but I don't race. I found this site when looking for some advice about vices. So here...
