Which tool do I use to cut my materials?

I've got a project coming up where I'll need to cut some steel. I don't do this often and it won't be many cuts. I'll need to cut several lengths of steel strut, which I'm not too worried about, and one pretty big rod. The rod is solid steel, 33 mm in diameter, and 15 inches long. I believe it...

Who makes a really long DOE wrench?

For comparison, Wright makes a 7/16x1/2 DOE wrench with a length of 6 3/8". In practice, I've found this to be a little short. Tekton's double angle 7/16 wrenches are much longer, but I'd prefer having two sizes in one tool.

    Plastic caps for square drives

One of the ratchets I bought from Proto shipped with a small red plastic cap with a square base that fits over the tang. Basically like a grease fitting cap. After the detent ball froze up on another of my ratchets earlier this year, I thought it might be good if each ratchet had a plastic cap...

How practical are dial torque wrenches?

I've been considering a dial torque wrench. I wouldn't have to set the desired torque beforehand, which would be great in instances where there are many bolts with different requirements. Additionally, dial torque wrenches are a little more accurate by design, but the benefit could easily be...

I need a bit holding extension for a custom screwdriver

Just looking for a quick recommendation. I want to make a custom 1/4" bit screwdriver. My plan is basically to epoxy a bit extension into a homemade handle. I'd like to use a US-made extension if I can, but I'm having trouble finding one. Zephyr makes several, ex: part #ZM10-L6, however they...

Why don't all pliers have a cam on the handle to keep the jaws parallel?

The Knipex (and newer clones) pliers wrench has a small cam on the handle which rotates against the lower jaw and keeps it parallel with the upper jaw throughout the entire range of movement. Why doesn't every pair of pliers have this? It would be especially useful for sheet metal seamers, and...

How can I straighten out a stretched sheet metal rail?

I work on a packaging machine in a bottling plant which folds cardboard cutouts into trays. At one point in the machine is a simple metal rail which holds two smaller flaps shut as the tray passes by. The rail is made of 1/16th inch thin sheet metal, though I'm not sure what kind. It's...
