Removing red chalkline? I need some advice please.

I had a new concrete driveway done about 9 months ago. They used a red chalk line to mark the cut lines. According to Irwin, it's "permanent" and it does not wash off. The contractor said that weather will eventually take care of it but now I have a pinkish hue all over my driveway. I'm not fond...

    Someone deleted my signature

I've been on this forum for almost 10 years now and apparently someone, I assume it was a moderator, has decided they didn't like my signature and has deleted it. Please put it back. As follows .... Don in Illinois - Home of political corruption and government incompetence.

    Slow site today

Things are slow this morning The GJ is responding slowly this morning and I'm getting bounced back to the main page once in a while. Photos are slow to load and sometimes just don't. I have a VERY fast connection and have no problems with other sites. Should I oil my wifi router? :bounce:

I'm logged in when I'm not logged in

Can't figure out why I'm always logged in. I log out, go someplace else, return to the GJ site and I see I'm already logged in. Maybe I have a "hidden" session open that I don't know about?

PEX for air - Reply from OSHA

After reading several posts concerning using PEX for air line, I thought I'd contact OSHA to see whether or not they thought it was ok. I was hoping to get a straight yes or no answer but knowing how government agencies work, I had a feeling that would not happen. My opinion is that if you have...

I was looking at some 48 volt cordless tools and started wondering ....... How high does battery voltage have to be before you can actually feel a shock if you touch both poles? Anybody know?

Concern about an old breaker box.

I think I have a problem and need some professional advice. I have an old building containing a lot of equipment and 2 large breaker panels that seem to be working fine. But there's a subpanel that I think may be a problem. It's an old Federal Pacific panel that powers a bunch of wall outlets...

Do you leave your cordless tool batteries in the charger?

I'm wondering if it causes any problems. Does it shorten or extend the life of the batteries? Any fire hazard? Seems like I hear about lithium battery fires a lot (cars, phones, airplanes). I checked my battery/charger manual and it says to remove the battery when it's charged. It says...

    120 vs 240

I have a tablesaw that will run on either 120 or 240 volts. When I bought it a few years ago I just plugged it into the 120 wall outlet and I've been perfectly happy with it's performance. I do have 240v readily available and I'm trying to understand why I think I should run it on 240. I have...

T-12 Lighting ........ my conspiracy theory

I guess it started about 10 years ago, I think. The Dept of Energy came up with some kind of an energy saving plan. Part of that plan was to eventually phase out much of the lighting we've been using for decades in favor of stuff that uses less power. Seems like a good idea. Now, about 10...

Got a "Dualsaw"? What's your opinion?

I'm looking for opinions on the various brands of "dualsaws". I've wanted one of these things for a while and now that there's several clones on the market, I'm ready to buy one but want to find the best value and avoid the brands that are problems. If you have one, what brand is it? Does it...

I think I have a dangerous grounding situation

My workshop is a 100 year old brick building. The previous owner was an electrical contractor, so I've been assuming that everything electrical should be ok, but it appears I have a problem that may be serious. It looks like all of the lighting and 120 volt wall outlets are grounded using the...

Electrical codes - Why the difference?

This question is for the pro electricians. I've often wondered why there is a difference in the electrical codes from town to town or city to city. Why is it that what is the best method of doing something is not the standard for everywhere? Just my experience ......... When I lived in...

    Anyone have a Rockwell Bladerunner?

I really want a bandsaw for metal but haven't found one at a reasonable price yet. So, temporarily I thought maybe the Rockwell Bladerunner would work for cutting relatively thin steel and aluminum, 1/4" or less. I've looked at it and was not too crazy about the quality but maybe it works...

    Where do disappearing tools go?

One of my oil filter wrenches has vanished. It's normally in a drawer with other sizes of filter wrenches. I don't think it was stolen because the only person that works in my shop is me. Maybe I subconsciously hid it just to drive myself crazy looking for it. I suspect that some tools run...

    Variable speed motors

Does anyone know what the difference is between an AC motor that can vary speed, like a router, and an AC motor with a fixed speed, like a drill press? I have to purchase a speed controller for the router I have mounted under my router table because the control on the router is difficult to see...

    Variable speed drill press

Any recommendations for a variable speed drill press? I'm looking for a benchtop model for less than $400. The Delta DP350 is pretty popular but I've read many bad reviews about it (quality problems). I'm really surprised that there are not many available at reasonable prices. You can buy a...
