i have better luck with ER4043 wire. as for the black soot .... clean your joint better and try changing your gun angle. dont push or pull the weld ... stay 90* to your direction of travel (i have no idea why this works for me, but when i start getting black soot, my gun angle is off though...

i love my weldcraft torches. super flexible and a good mix between durable and light. Do watch the braided hoses ... keep them clean as debris abrades them over time with heavy use in nasty environments. for a watercooled torch, WP-20. end of story. 250 amps ... light and flexible...

i keep the miller 211 on my service truck (and a tiny bottle of C25) for a JIC welder. Best money i ever spent. YMMV

why are you testing on 1.750" plate? 1" plate qualifies you for Unlimited Thickness.

this is why i have a drawer completely stocked with ... if my safety glasses get scratched ... i toss them. i cannot stand scratched safety glasses. i hate them and i will not wear them ... so i keep a drawer full of new ones. that way i never have an excuse to not wear them.
