    dust collection

I have an old Delta unit single stage, worked ok never happy with it. Have a cyclone system mounted in the basement shop now, big monster does collect nearly everything and minimal residual dust. Building a shop across the lane trying to decide how to collect dust since the current dust...

    Introduction and Garage Question

Our garage has that and was built in the late '70's. Personally I hate it and would never buy a garage with it. Building a new shop without the nefarious step

    My First "Shop/Garage"

The challenge I see with a pole barn setup in South Carolina is that the poles end up being the wall and roof foundation. All sorts of critters in the ground like to use wood for all sorts of nefarious purposes of their own, which means the poles may not last as long as you want the structure...

Protecting electronics when on generator power

One thing to consider with a gasoline generator is what type of gasoline to feed it. I go out of my way to find no ethanol gasoline for my '68 Barracuda, our Honda generator, all of my yard tools and well as my two chainsaws. The fuel I use stays good for at least a year. Ethanol containing...

    40x60 garage/barn layout

Make sure you check with your local government regarding what rules and or regulations you must adhere to. My garage is the same size overall as yours..... but limited to two roll up doors due to the city insanity (Logan Utah). I have accepted it as something I have to accept and live with...

    Garage AIR design experience?

I helped a buddy put in his automotive shop air system. He had a huge air compressor (15 hp or more as I recall and an equally large tank). We put in 4" main lines (100 feet long in some instances) to increase the volume of air for lifts and air tools. Never heard a complaint about that in...

Creating Garage Ambiance ; Post Your Alternative Ambient Lighting

Seems to me that there are two basic shop / garage types.... First are those who want a fancy place to relax, entertain and enjoy their vehicles. Second are those who use their garage / shop for all sorts of activities, like a real workshop, not a visiting place. I am in the second category...

What's Your Favorite Garage Floor Design?

If you want a show place then whatever strikes your fancy works. If you will work in the shop / garage then I would select a light gray or white, which will show things like bolts, screws, oil drips, etc. I am in the process of building a shop / garage and the floors will be light gray...

    building garage on slope

We are having a shop / garage built now that is on a slope (about 7 feet) from one corner diagonally to the other. The road slopes as well (about 15 percent), so the basement of the garage is the apartment (required by the city for zoning) and shop. The actual garage is level with the street...

    workshop layout

I find that storage / workbenches against the wall work for some things. For woodworking I want a free standing workbench with access from all sides. Most mechanical work and ends is all I need.

Whats the best way to Heat & Cool my shop?

For cooling, try a cupola (a raised section that has vents all around), they work well if you can get a good cross draft going which does require low level openings. My father built a big greenhouse in Colorado at 6,000' elevation that had a cupola, which kept it reasonably cool in the summer...

Floor planning for my new garage.

If you garage is mostly show then the checkerboard patterns are very showy and fun. If you work alot in the garage / shop then the pattern will drive you nuts. When you drop a little screw good luck finding it. Been there done that, not doing that again.

    LED downlight in 19x23ft garage.

I agree the payback on LED's assumes you are using them way more than I ever will. The T8's work well. Here the T8 to LED bulbs are about $9 USD each from Home Depot, still pricey. Next T12 conversion I'll use those bulbs instead of the T8's. I have more to get done at our home and a new...

Whats the best material to line the inside of a workshop?

One thing to see if you can find is the white plastic sheets they line truck trailers (enclosed ones) with. That stuff comes in big 8 foot high sheets rolled up and as I recall is 1/8" thick. We lined a race car trailer with it, that stuff is tough, white and is pebbled. We got it as end...
