Good place to get tools online?

I've bought tools from a lot of websites. Often times I will see something on the tools trucks and find it online under a different brand name for a fraction of the price. I've had nothing but good service from tooltopia.com. They usually have the lowest prices as well if you factor in shipping...

    The Harbor Freight PASS/FAIL Thread...

Cen-tech infrared thermometer...Pass Been using one regularly for the last few weeks. Seems to be accurate within the given specs. Only complaint I have (and its a small one) is that it defaults to celcius. Oh yea, also doesn't work well on stainless, but I don't think many do. With coupon only...

Parts washer, are they safe enough in the garage?

I don't know about you but I can't stand the smell of dirty solvent. Minimizing exposure with some simple ventilation might be something to look in to. Especially if you don't change solvent very often but spend a significant time standing over the tank. An overhead bathroom type fan, if placed...

    Snap on Drill Bits..

I was looking at those as well but decided to go with the Mac Cobalt bits. Mainly because the Mac guy is the only one who seems to warranty broken bits. The case they come in is pretty cool too.

    Matco Cylinder Leakage Tester

Has anybody used the new Matco cylinder leakage tester (CLT2APB, $128)? I'm debating between this and the Snap-on (EEPV309A, $330). I've used the Snap-on one and it worked fine but I don't know that it is worth the extra cash. This will be seeing regular shop use.

    Mechanic qualifications?

I think some form of certification should be required. It would at least weed out the people who definitely shouldn't be techs and possibly even set a respectable standard for the profession. I'm in my fist year of two year automotive program and 30 to 40 percent of the students in my class...

    shop air hoses

Even the rubber hoses can be a pain to coil if they get cold enough (or get old). I got so tired of coiling mine that I recently purchased a Lincoln hose real with 50 feet of 3/8 hose. I can pull out 50 feet of hose in ten seconds and put it back in about half that time. IIRC I bought it for...

    attention c'man deal specialists

I use that same box for school. It currently weighs about 110 lbs and still has a bit more room. It's a little rough lifting it into the trunk of my car early in the morning but it is nice to have the extra space to keep stuff organized.

Why do carbon brushes need replacing and what are they?

Some start out dished, others get that way with use.

    Classic Snap-on Box

Saw this in the local Craig's list. http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/tls/913899591.html I don't know about two grand but I would be pretty psyched to have it for my antique tool collection.

    Is this welder worth considering?

Thanks for the response. I think I already talked myself out of buying it. I really want a Lincoln Power Mig 180C but can't afford it. http://www.mylincolnelectric.com/Catalog/equipmentdatasheet.aspx?p=42422 A more realistic option is the Clarke 180 EN for about half the price...

    How do you torque?

I would suspect that wheels, more specifically front rotors and hubs are less prone to damage from taking the lug nuts off in one go than say a cylinder head. It seems like pretty standard practice for people to do it this way. However, tightening torque is a different story. There is a huge...

    How do you torque?

I watched a snap-on video recently specifically on this subject. For applications with multiple fasteners the three stage method should be used (divide total torque value in thirds). This is particularly important when working with things like aluminum cylinder heads. Following the...

    Am I too picky?

I had the exact thing happen to me. It was a home depot chepo gun that was such a mess that I ended up just tossing it. The lendee was one of my best friends at the time and this was not an isolated incidence. He gave me a hard time when I started telling him no until I told him that every time...
