Years ago I swapped to a pistol grip gun for such situations. Turns out to be pretty handy most of the time.

We did that on a jobsite recently. Rather than tie into a return duct we ran a homerun to the return plenum. In this case it was a 4" duct to take heat off the ceiling of a tech equipment room. It's important to filter air from any return.

Instead of a trunk line down the center with several branches, I think it's better to run a loop around the shop with drops as needed. That way any point along the way is fed from both sides of the loop.
