    great that you have no desire to use wire brush. as far as maintaining the integrity of the piece, using the wire brush is throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

    honest wear wears well. making effort to bring an old piece back to new condition and/or making permanent alterations to enhance it's desirability is a mistake that is frequently made by new collectors. I suggest you simply maintain the integrity of the piece.
