    Shed attic, heat/insulation?

Ventilation. insulation will slow heat transfer, but won’t stop it from heating up. The part usually missing with ventilation is the air intake. You want a place for air to enter the building as low as possible so natural convection or an exhaust fan moves the hot air out the top and replaces...

Any suggestions for a portable garage which could survive in Alberta winters and cost less than $500?

$500 is probably below the threshold to accomplish what you want. A conex box may be your cheapest option. Pricing varies with location somewhat. Last ones I got were ~$3500 delivered.

    Do you use vintage tools?

Just sat down to cool off after dismounting a large ZTR tire. I used an old car body clamp that belonged to my father-in-law to break the bead, and some tire irons that belonged to my great-grandfather to dismount it. My vintage, 65 year old body was sweating and occasionally grunting, but the...

Replace Two Step Ladders for Fold Up

I have a 6ft platform ladder, an 8ft step ladder, a 10ft platform ladder as well as an 8ft. little Giant. I use them all, and consider the LG a different tool, not a replacement for any of the others

    Backup power solar generator

180AH will power a 1.5A AC load for 12 hours. A phone charger. It would take 450W of solar and 12 full hours of bright sunlight to charge the battery while running the load so that you can run the 1.5A load overnight. Thats a toy, not a backup.

    Backup power solar generator

180AH isn’t going to be much of a backup. Solar only generates near max for 6 or 7 hours on an absolutely clear day in an area with no blockages. Not the kind of weather you are likely to have power outages. IMO, those solar generators are scams as they are marketed to perform well beyond their...

    Tool Distribution

I generally take the job to the tools when at all possible. I have a compact but very versatile set in a box in my truck, a small box on the tractor and ATV, a few in the house, but the vast majority in a single box in my shop.

    Vintage Crescent 12” adjustable

Going through my dad’s toolbox after Mom passed, I came across an older 12” Crescent adjustable wrench. Likely my grandpa’s or maybe his dad’s. I was struck by how much beefier this wrench is than a modern version. Was this the norm at the time, or was this a special purpose wrench. Long line...

GOJO original formula hand cleaner, discontinued?

I get all kinds of hits on Google. Carquest and Do-It-Best both show it.

    Never fails!

That’s what I’m afraid of

    Never fails!

On mine, the handle linkage and a hose fitting are in the way of getting a wrench on the bolts that release pressure. The linkage blocks top access, hose fitting blocks inboard and the mower frame blocks outboard. I guess I need to get a crowfoot that fits. 15 minute job to take the linkage...

    Never fails!

I had my day all planned out. A little gardening this morning followed by mowing in order to beat some incoming rain. Then I had an appointment at a lumber yard to get a list of materials for some deck and stair railings figured out. 5 minutes before I finished mowing, the ZTR shut down just as...

    Well water stink

Katalox is effectively the same as green sand. Both are manganese dioxide coatings on a substrate and do the same thing.

    Well water stink

Several things. Hydrogen sulfide can be a product of iron eating bacteria in the well. Shocking the well on a regular schedule may minimize or eliminate the odor. It can also be present in the ground or produced away from the well where you can’t shock it. In this case, a green sand filter or...

    Remote controlled light switches

Wifi isn’t a great choice. It generally relies on a server somewhere being accessible to work. A while back, one of the biggest smart bulb manufacturers, Sengled, went under. Bricked a whole bunch of bulbs. You are also stuck if your free controller suddenly becomes a subscription based...

How to avoid condensation and moisture from forming on a lean to overhang on garage

Condensation happens when air containing moisture comes in contact with a material that cools the air below its dew point. You have a few simple ways to avoid condensation. Make the roof the same temperature as the air by ventilating or heating. Or seal the space so the moist air doesn’t get to...

Pick my plans apart - What did you wish you did when you built?

The two big things I’d have done differently are that I would have installed floor heat, and I’d have built a segregated dirty and hot work area with no wood for welding, grinding and torch work. After working in my neighbor’s shop, floor heat is a dream. I do most of my metal work outdoors...

Looking to make simple plastic hinges for birdhouses.

Sorry I dropped off the thread. The night after I last posted, some good friends’ house was damaged when a tornado dropped their neighbor’s roof on their house. Spent several days getting their house watertight, and then we headed to Florida for a while. Finally got a picture of one of the...

    You’re Using Your Tools Wrong!

Though it may seem amusingly basic to most of us, I’ve known several people who would have benefited greatly from carefully watching this. One thing that stood out to me was the “good” mechanic had grease under his fingernails during the Allen wrench segment.
