Opinions Wanted: Light Duty Welding "Table"

We have a split level & the garage (my shop area) is under my kid's bedrooms. I get grief when I crack open paint or solvent so I want to weld outside due to the smoke. The welder is a fluxcore one. But, I am not going to pound on it so maybe the cement board is superfluous?

Opinions Wanted: Light Duty Welding "Table"

I picked up a Century 100 Weld Pak yesterday and want to use it ASAP. I only need it for small stuff right now and I need a welding area I can move out of the way when done. Here is my idea: I have a 30" square of ~8-10 gauge sheetmetal. It was part of the case for a furnace. I would cut a...

    The Ex-Files--acid sharpening dull files

I have not tried to acid resharpen but the method is detailed in Modern Blacksmithing by Weygers. The author was a proponent of it. I use muriatic to derust tools and it is phenomenal for that task.

Dumb, obvious question time: The point of grinding is to prep the top surface for an epoxy layer?

Who makes the best water heater?

We had a stone-lined Vaughn hot water heater that was installed in the mid-1960's. It came out of service in 2005 when we changed to a Mega-Stor. The company that did the work said that long service life from stone-lined tanks is not uncommon. Glass-lined however 10, 15 if you are a gambler.

How do you deal with pocked or flaking concrete floor?

We had our front steps redone and the mason cautioned us on using salt because it will flake the concrete & mortar. He said it will start the following spring-summer. We keep a bucket of builder's sand by the front door w/ scoop now and scrape the stairs as soon as the snow ends.

How do you deal with pocked or flaking concrete floor?

After my floor is refinished (whichever way I go), some machine tools will be in place. Do the ones you mention cure hard or will there be some "sink" with weight on it?

Anyone use Ikea cabinets for the shop?

IKEA is having a lot of in-store blowouts right now. Their aluminum louver roll-front cabinets are at $75 from $250. Much stuff discontinued and will phase out by April.

What do you guys do for a garage sound system..??

I am clearing out the hobby that currently resides in the garage in order to reclaim it for more garagely tasks. The old hobby? Audio, a whole garage worth. Don't know what the final config will be but it will have vacuum tubes in the amps, PA speakers, & internet music streaming (+ CD/DVD, a...

How do you deal with pocked or flaking concrete floor?

Great, just great. I am tempted to just dump a bucket of epoxy over it and call it a day.

How To Protect Cardboard Boxes Tools Came In?

The only downside on cardboard is that it retains moisture. If you are in a humid area it could lead to rust. In New England, cardboard & tool steel is bad news for long term storage in a garage.

Hole Saw set for cutting stainless

Could it be the conduit ones that wear more? Some of my radio chassis punches I've had for close to 20 years and they seem to still work like new. My 3/4" has probably seen the most use and it still punches a nice clean hole.

Hole Saw set for cutting stainless

Those Blair hole cutters are cool! I use Greenlee radio punches when I can and hole saws second. If you watch eBay you can find radio punches cheaply and pretty large too. They will cut through stainless if it is 16 gauge or thinner. You need access to the backside of the material and must...

    Modifications to Drill Press

It's a true beast with a huge base and column. I looked a several same vintage Deltas and got the Craftsman instead. Built just as well but some nice extra features. The looks nailed the deal for me. Mine's gray like the picture but they came in gold too.
