    Control joints

What is the black stuff? Dust, hard material, or? Try to vacuum it out, or dig into the cut with a screw driver to see what it is.

    Steel Building Trim Question

I looked into metal siding quite a bit, most of the major manufacturers have their own standard details and trim pieces for just about every condition. But sometimes things always "standard", that's when flat stock colored metal, a brake, and a good mechanic makes problems go away.

Looking for a quality benchtop mill

The limited time I've used a benchtop, one thing is an issue at least for me. If you are working on a piece where the quill doesn't have enough stroke, or you need to change from an endmill to a chuck and find you need to raise the head, DON"T get a round column mill.

going to start cutting my floor tomorrow

Couldn't you disconnect each line at the heat source, and blow air in one and catch the water out of the other? Cutting back the concrete around each line far enough without damaging it, aint gonna be easy. If you get it done, be sure to pressure test the connections before new concrete.

Don't know about their tools, but I've seen work boots with CAT name and they are garbage chinee stuff.

    Trying to use dead space

Those cleats are used often. Most cabinet makers, for commercial use at least, use them to hang the wall units. Makes installation quick and easy. There is also a similar product used in retail stores, the cleats cover the display walls and many types of hangers are available to fit them. Kinda...

    Propane tank location

I downloaded the NFPA sheet, but haven't read it yet. But I see more propane tanks set against the house, 2 to 4 tanks linked together, than I see the big horizontal tanks set off away from the house. For smaller tanks on the 100 pound range, it needs to be at least 3 feet from an opening (door...

    Riding Lawn mower pto clutch

I've had a JD mower for 30+ years, and the clutch went out on it after 10 years. The JD replacement was over $150 back then. It's still working but I sure would try an aftermarket one if I needed another.

    Quick-Glo

OK. I looked up the MSDS on NeverDull once and it said naptha was the active part. I used to use it all the time to clean brass case necks before reloading, but got worried about the chemical on my bare fingers all the time, so I switched to steel wool. Just curious about Quick Glo.

    Quick-Glo

    Would it compare to Never-Dull?

After heavy winter, roof leaking during spring storms.

That metal roof will be going strong when asphalt is dried up. But these maintenance things need to be kept up. Many believe screws should be installed in the ribs. There is logic to this, but pulling down the screw where i properly loads against the washer can be iffy. I re-roofed my barn this...

    Machinists level.

My game is chambering barrels. Once the bed is aligned, I take pains to get the tailstock in alignment with the headstock. Fore and aft isn't much of a problem but sometime the height is off. Some say tail stocks are intentionally made a few tho high to wear down. I push a reamer with a dead...

    Machinists level.

When I check my lathe, I mark the bed where the level sits the the position of the level, across the bed, on each end. I don't look for perfect level, but look to get each end the same. For a twist in the bed. I don't care if the carriage is running up hill or down, but I want it in the same...

    Truss/Sheating question

Diagonal braces on the inside of the framed unsheathed wall. Install a brace in the middle of the length on both sides to insure the wall stays straight will getting the trusses on top. Very easy to bump the wall out of alignment mid span.

    Arthritis and tools

I don't think I could nail framing for very long anymore. I put new shingles on a couple sheds a few years ago and invested in a roofing nailer. Saved my bacon. If I had to drive a bunch of nails I would get an air nailer. Got finish nailer too. Hand tools I now wear gloves most all the time...

    Residential Air Handler help (freezing)

I changed out my whole heatpump system after 13 years of use, new air handler new condenser new lines. I changed filters regularly. I was SHOCKED when I looked at the bottom side of the evaporator coil on the old unit, was very dirty and partially blocked. With the new system installed, I cut an...

    Drilling strategy

Looks like you can drill under the #7 horizontal bars, which is the strength of the beam. Drill at 3' centers you'll hit a few bands, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over those. You hit bars, you have to either drill new holes or core drill.

how many sharpenings can you get out of a chainsaw chain?

I carry a file with me when I'm out cutting for touchups as needed. But when I get home I like to clamp the bar in the vice and file. I mark the top of the vice with a sharpie with a 30 degree X across the top. I use that as a guide to file, but once you get in the process, I really don't need...
