The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

i backed my truck up to the dumpster to unload some metal , and there it was sitting on top of some scrap metal. Lucky for me, it was not thrown into the dumpster, (a 40 ft model), as I would not have seen it,. Whoever left it there, placed it on top . It had some rainwater in the drawers from...

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

I came across a tool box in the metal dumping dumpster at my town yard. I was astounded to see it was a very old Kennedy in unbelievable shape. I wrote to the company and asked them about it's origins, since it was not labeled with a model number, and looked like no other I have seen online...

    Double Flaring Tool set

Only application for steel lines is if you need to install pre-bent/formed ones, and they already have flares. For anyone in the rustbelt states uncoated steel brake lines are at best , temporary. Using the nickel copper mixed lines not only gives you strength and longevity , it also makes most...

What's a decent quality chainsaw with good online parts availability?

I like stihl and husky. Used to heft big saws, and still have them, but my go to unless it is huge wood, is the stihl top handle ms 201t with a 14 inch bar. If you know how to handle a saw, then this light top handle model can be used for most anything, and the beauty is weight, 8 lbs with bar...

    Milwaukee M18 leaf blower?

The M18 outdoor tools are quality made, I have the string trimmer, and as part of that deal, got the leaf blower free. The quick lok power head came out right after I purchased the string trimmer- of course- !@ That makes things even better, since you can also get the tree trimming chainsaw...

    Old hammers need handles

Newly handled hammers , sledges, axes, hatchets and the like are a pleasure to use, since you have resurrected them from the scrap heap. If you have a fire going, easy way to rid the hammer head of a broken handle stub= throw it in the fire, it burns out wihout any effort.....Plenty of how to...

How do you store screws (or any small parts) ?

Used to use coffee cans, as I store lots of a general category stuff together, such as all large nuts, large washers, medium sized, small, nut and bolt combos, sheet metal screws, etc. I now use the large sized clear plastic containers that peanuts, cashews and almonds come in. See through, and...

Good triple square sockets to own

Not a VW, AUDI, or Porsche (I wish) guy. My only encounter with these was BBS wheels on a SAAAB 9-5 . They use them on fasteners (21 of them!) for their 2 piece RK II wheels. They are proprietary fasteners (BBS does not/will not sell them), because they do not want people taking their wheels...

    Snap On s80

recently purchased sl80 to try the dual 80 , having used a trusty sk 1/2 " long handle for 10 years. The SK, always came through for tuff 1/2 " requirements, and the SO is doing aok so far. Both are very capable ratchets imho.

    Need snow removal advice

Snow removal can be difficult, and everyone has different situations to deal with. Snowblowing with a good machine could be the answer for you, but several factors come into play, as posters have mentioned. One other important thing is your physical condition. If you are healthy and active...

    Flex-head ratchets vs Universal Joints

I own 2 flex heads, SO FLF936-( long handle 3/8 "), and SK 42775- long handle 1/2", and though I have had both for 10 years, I must admit, I have never used either!! They are in mint condition sitting in my main tool chest. I thought I would definitely need them, when I got them, but wobble...

When to use 1/4" vs. 3/8" vs. 1/2" drives

IMHO, 3/8 inch is the "centerfielder" of the 3 sizes mentioned. Go down to smaller sizes easily, clearance permitting, just as easily go to larger sizes, torque requirements permitting. As previous posters noted, let common sense and experience be your guide. One bogey in loosening fasteners is...

    Bottle Jacks

I have a 4 ton one, with adjustment screw on top of shaft, at least 25 years old, ALLTRADE is the brand, and though small (8 inches compressed) it is a strong heavy piece of gear. I never looked, but just checked, made in Taiwan!! Who knew.....these are great for positioning engines, using a...

    extra long combination wrenchs

I have the Matco MCLxxM2 w set (**=8-19), 12 pt, and frankly, unless I need a short one, I never use other wrenches, and I have SK, CM, TOPTL ,sets, and some SO regulars . These are just long ones though, not the XLs. Regular auto/truck/farm machinery use for over 10 years, no problems.

    Hints for refinishing vise jaws

Forgive me if I am hijacking this thread, but it is about vise jaws. I .have a kobalt vise, and the jaws are fastened by countersunk allen head bolts into the cast body of the vise. Never worked right, threads were horrible from the get go, should have taken back, but thought I could fix it =...

What was your best tool purchase this year?

I love my SO fl936 ratchet, has been go to 3/8 for long time without any problems. Wanted to try dual 80 version fl80. liked it so much, I had to try other sizes! so f80, t72, tl72 and sl80 added to my ratchets. Very nice additions. All have been put into active duty on automotive/truck...

    stud extractors

Ford continues to "improve " the exhaust manifold fastening hardware. Latest offering is gen 7 !! The titan puller works nice, but nuts need to be off first, cut off prior to attempt, and remove the exhaust manifold off the studs. By doing this way, you have the best chance, and most material to...

    cutting concrete

Funny this topic came up. I need to replace an underground water suction line on my pool. 4ft underground, topped by concrete sidewalk slabs. My plan is to cut 14 inch wide path from filter house to pool, remove concrete pieces and dig trench to access/replace line. Concrete has mesh type...

    Milwaukee M12 vs M18

we use them both frequently. M12 powers my new 3/8 " ratchet stick(pretty slick), radio, and small drill. M18 powers impact drivers, recip saw and skill saw. Don't think I could choose either, I need BOTH!! Obviously Milwaukee supports this preference, with the M18/M12 combo charger. On my list!!
