Anyone ever heard of Desmond Stephen vises?

I recently got two--one from my uncle's house when I was cleaning out his basement. It's the Desmond Stephan "Simplex" model. It looks the same as the red vise in the second picture. My uncle came over from Ireland after WWII, and probably bought the vise in the 1950s. I haven't...

Anybody use Craftsman raised panel wrenches?

With the exception of the Cman full polish deep offset wrenches I just got, all my wrenches are Cman raised panel combination. I've been using my original set since 1980, added to them over the years, and never had any problem. I hear people complain about them being hard on the hands, but I'm...

    let's see your speed handles

I've got a 1/2' and a 3/8" C-man, the old style, with the knob on the end. After I break my lug nuts loose, I use the 1/2" to run the nuts off.

What socket depth to remove lug nuts?

I use a 1/2" deep 19mm chrome socket, a 3" or 6" extension, a 3/4' drive adapter and a 3/4" breaker or ratchet on my Subarus. One time I tried my electric impact, with a C-man deep impact socket. There seemed to be enough clearance in the well, but in fact there was just a little bit of...

do you really need 1/2 and 1/4 rachets?

I don't want this to sound like I'm poking at anyone, but I wasn't sure if it was a serious question either. I use 1/2" drive all the time, and ever since I started DIY work on cars 30 years ago. And, for the first time, I started using 3/4' drive breakers and ratchet handles. This occurred...

C-Man 12 Piece Full Polish Deep Offset Wrench Set

I didn't manage any discount, so the set was $79, and with tax and shipping, it came out to about $92.00. If any one was interested to know, there was a sheet of paper packed inside the poly bag the wrenches were in: it ran down the list of wrenches in the set, along with some generic Craftsman...

C-Man 12 Piece Full Polish Deep Offset Wrench Set

Got my wrenches today and am happy to report that they are made in USA.... Yippee! I got a scare last night, after checking on my order status. UPS claimed that they delivered to me earlier last night, when, in fact, they had not. It took forever to get hold of someone from UPS, and then I...

    Craftsman 1970 model worth $35

I had / have two of these carpenter's boxes. First one was a brown wrinkle finish from Kennedy. I bought it in 1982 for about $40 or so, It was stolen in 1994 and then I got a red C-man one, for about $50 or so, I think. Both had hasps in the middle, instead of the lock on the one in the...

    craftsman 1/2" drive slide bar

I have C-man 1/2" and 3/4". I don't use the 1/2" much, but I regularly use the the 3/4" when I take lug nuts off.

C-Man 12 Piece Full Polish Deep Offset Wrench Set

It looks like I need another cup of coffee--I just noticed that your link had pretty much the same number as the model number that I had. That should be the same set. Thanks again for the info.

C-Man 12 Piece Full Polish Deep Offset Wrench Set

I am thinking of ordering the Craftsman "Professional 12 Piece Standard and Metric 12 Point Full Polish Deep Offset Box End Wrench Set" (that's a mouthful). I wanted to know if it's made in the USA, but it's available online only, and the item description doesn't mention the COO. When I called...

    Crescent or Craftsman Adjustable Wrench?

When I was looking for a 12", and later on, a 15" adjustable wrench, I had checked out both Craftsman and Crescent. I wound up getting Craftsman for both--the actions were pleasingly snug. I thought that there was too much play in the Crescent wrenches. The 15" was made by Western Forge; I'm...

    Bent radiator / intercooler fins

I just touched up some damaged fins on my window AC units. I had ordered two combs from McMaster Carr. They were cheap plastic but they did the trick. They were double ended, with different fin pitches on each end. I found that it was better to start from the edge if the damaged area and...

older generation ratchet rebuild kits; now available!

I was at a Sears in Dartmouth, MA, just a little while ago. I brought in two of my C-man 3/8" ratchets, a -V- 43784 straight handle and a -V- 42793 flex. Both of these have worn ratchet gears but otherwise are good condition. I asked a clerk if they had rebuild kits--he originally said that he...

where to get Craftsman regular sockets?

I've gotten sockets from RZ. I think that he buys sets and breaks them up. The sockets been good deals, but they all had the dual markings on them. The chrome on a 1/2" drive deep metric 6 pt 19mm is coming off after i dropped it about three feet onto blacktop.
