Is the Parker 22X vise one of Parker's "Superior" line? It seems so but I haven't seen Parker catalog descriptions that say that. It's possible that the 22X was made before they called their vises Superior and Eclipse lines.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Outlawmws, Here are the exact steps I made to get the image into the post. Please let me know if there is a better way. Thanks 1) In the "quick reply" area window at the bottom of the thread, I clicked on the image "postage stamp" and it popped up a window for the image URL, which I didn't...

I used the manage attachments popup, copied the Garage Journal link. I see it and in your reply I see the image twice.

Here are a couple colors I like for vintage vises. What colors do you like (if you like painting)?

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I'm confused. The 249X seems to be a Superior Parker but the description above makes it unclear. What is the difference between a 249 and a 249X? Looks like they are both swivel. The 249 was 75 lbs and the 249X was 84 lbs.

And the 260X was 5 times the price of the 249X. It cost more per lb, which is unusual for larger versions of most things.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

The 249X is heavier, but there are other factors like iron quality, workmanship, design. Which one is more collectable?

    The VISES of Garage Journal

How does the older (and heavier) Parker 249X vise (4 1/4") compare to the newer Parker 974 (or 974 1/2)? Was the 974 an improvement?

    Common J Section Pulley?

Update: I'm not worried about modifying the pulley and having it run true, I can do that. I haven't found any automotive pulleys that were J-section. Looks like I might have found a few J pulleys commonly used on lawn mowers and snow throwers.

    Show us your VFD conversions/installations

Works great for variable speed on drill presses, lathes ,etc. but to do it right you have to do several things: 1) Use an oversize motor 2) Overspeed the motor for highest speeds 3) Use at least 2 pulley steps 4) Maintain sufficient belt speed for torque/hp

    Common J Section Pulley?

I am looking for a source for common J section poly-v automotive pulleys. I want to modify them for woodworking tool use. If I could find out what car models use J section for their power steering or water pump pulleys I would be able to find pulleys. Automotive pulley manufacturers never say...

Twagler, That looks like a Craftsman spindle, but don't know who made if for Craftsman. Some Craftsman vises with those arrows on the movable jaw were made in Japan.

I found a Hollands 14 vise in nice shape. Have not been able to find much information about the brand online.

That broken green Reed is funny. I have run across a lot of people selling vises that think bad repair jobs with ugly welds is not a problem, doesn't decrease the value one little bit.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Jaw caps on the machinists' vise is a no-brainer, my only real concern is the serrations on the filers' vise. Jaw caps on it would defeat the whole purpose of the shape of the filers' vise jaw. I would grind down the serrations slightly if my only goal was to use it. I plan to make a special...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Why did Reed make the jaw face serrations so extremely coarse on their "machinist's" and "toolmaker's" vises? The coarse pattern would marr up soft metals and have no benefit on hard metals. On the machinist's vise, you could use copper jaw caps. But on the toolmaker's vise (filer's vise)...

    Parker Vise Sloppy Spindle Mystery

I like the idea of making the washer/bushing out of Delrin just to see if it would hold up. No harm will be done to the vise to try it. Here is a drawing I made showing the exact shape I need to get .020" backlash.

    Parker Vise Sloppy Spindle Mystery

I did put a bushing in a Parker a couple years ago and it worked fine. As long as the hole in the jaw is lined up with the nut there shouldn't be a problem. But I suspect that the main purpose of the oversize hole is to reduce the need for accurate machining on a relatively crude product...

    Parker Vise Sloppy Spindle Mystery

KMScott, thank you very much for your reply! With your help and looking at the parts I have, I think this mystery is solved. The thing that didn’t make sense to me about the design was the oversize hole in the jaw. It bothered me that the spindle was not supported well at the handle end in...
