    Parker Vise Sloppy Spindle Mystery

I am now thinking that the "pilot bore" in the jaw is not for the flange on the spindle, but rather for the washers. If this is true, the only thing I can't explain is why the hole in the jaw is so large (.917" diameter) and why the spindle surface is so rough (not good for a bearing surface)...

    Parker Vise Sloppy Spindle Mystery

This was my original theory, which I now believe to be wrong. My later post explains. The attached photos illustrate my Parker sloppy spindle issue. No scenario here makes sense to me. It is hard to believe the 2 washers are original because they push the spindle flange out of the jaw...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Can anyone help me determine the year this Parker 229X was made? I think it was after 1910 and before 1920.

Search Automotive K Pulleys by Diameter?

Crickets here. Been looking some more, looks like these sizes are available in supercharger pulleys (small one) and water pump pulleys (large one).

Search Automotive K Pulleys by Diameter?

Just to be clear, I want to search K pulleys by number of grooves and diameter, but then I want to know the part number or what vehicle it is used on so I can then find it on eBay or other places.

Search Automotive K Pulleys by Diameter?

I am looking for some automotive 6-groove K pulleys to modify for use on woodworking machines. I haven't found a way to search for them by size, only by vehicle model. Right now I am trying to find a pulley about 3" for the motor on my drill press and one about 4.5" for the spindle (VFD...

    Show us your VFD conversions/installations

I got this 1 hp VFD at Wolf Automation for $140. This Teco is an easy model to program and I like the pot on the front. My other VFDs are Fuji Frenic and I like them too. Also have pot on the front and almost as easy to program. But for someone new to these, programming might look...

    Show us your VFD conversions/installations

Here is a VFD mounted on the back of a Rockwell mill. I put it back there to keep the chips out of it. If needed, the speed control knob is still easily reached from the front. But I only put it on the machine to run it on single phase.

Athol 624 Vise Restored Just finished restoring an Athol 624 vise. For 30 years this was my beater vise that sat in the corner of the garage. I got it out recently and decided it wasn't getting enough respect and restored it. It will be promoted to my lathe tool bench. Notice the buttress...

    Show us your VFD conversions/installations

This VFD installation on a Clausing 20" was pretty simple and worked out very well. The VFD and 4" power switch box are both mounted on a piece of angle iron. The VFD is within easy reach so no remote switch or speed control was needed. With a 1200 rpm motor and VFD overspeed, I was able to...

    Columbian Vise T-Jaws

I have seen a lot of posts on Columbian T-jaw pins, but I have not seen them described properly (maybe I missed it). I just took mine out and it was easy. I assumed that they were tapered pins in tapered holes. I was wrong. The holes in my 504 1/2 jaws and the jaw inserts are all #11 holes...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I have a couple of old Reed vises (models 203 and 104 1/2) that have extremely coarse teeth in the jaw face diamond pattern. Other manufacturers tended to go with a fine pattern like Parker. The old catalog pages called my Reed vises "machinist vises", so I wouldn't think that would mean rough...

    Needle Scaler Warp?

I would like to use a needle scaler to remove paint from a cast iron wood jointer. If I use it on all the cast iron surfaces except the machined top surfaces, is there any risk of warping the jointer tables?

    Best Shop Lights

The LED tubes I tried were the type which require removing or bypassing the ballast. The intensity is about the same as florescent, but the fact that only the bottom half emits light means there is no reflected light from the fixture. So the total light output is much less than a florescent.

    Best Shop Lights

I have lots of cheap T-8 florescent fixture in my shop. The solid state ballasts have been going bad. I thought going LED would be the best choice going forward. Now I think maybe T-8 florescent is still best considering the total light they put out and their low glare. I took this picture...

    Baldor Motor Question

I have 2 Baldor motors. I will keep one for my new compressor and sell the other on my old compressor. Is one any better than the other if I don't care about the TEFC? It will be running in my clean basement shop. It would be a little less work to keep the gray one (see photo), but if the...

    Champion Vs Curtis Pump?

I am building up a compressor from parts. I have 2 new single stage 2 cylinder pumps. One is a Champion BVAS and the other is a Curtis ES-10. I am trying to decide which one to use. The Curtis is higher flow, but for this particular application cfm is not very important, both will do the job...

Everything you need to know about bench vises...

I am a wannabe collector of old bench or machinist vises. This forum is one of the most informative places that I have found for old USA bench vises. Are there other sites or books that have good information on the subject? I haven't found any books on the subject of old bench vises.

Ridgid F60 Vise Handle and Modification

Anyone know the diameter and length of a Ridgid F60 vise handle? I bought one of these vises but the handle was missing. I suspect that they are 18mm diameter and probably about a foot long, but I would like to know what was originally used. The Ridgid uses a similar spring on the spindle to...
