Jos. F. McCoy Co., 157 Chambers St., New York, New York / Irving Mfg & Tool Co., New York, New York

I found it thru google. https://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/bispi00.jsp it’s the NYC Department of Buildings - Building Information Search My parents were born, raised and worked in the BedSty section of Brooklyn near the Navy Yard. I used this site to do much research of the houses they lived...

Jos. F. McCoy Co., 157 Chambers St., New York, New York / Irving Mfg & Tool Co., New York, New York

Don’t be so sure about them not forging tools in that building. According the NYC DOB a certificate of occupancy was issued in 1931 for a 5 story factory at that location. That’s the earliest CO I could find on line. I know for a fact that the 1st company I worked at was founded in 1852 in...

    X/32 " (i.e. 19/32 ", 21/32 ") socket set recommendations

Years ago, I put together a 1/2” drive Williams set. I was able to find 19/32, 21/32, 25/32 and 31/32 sockets. I scored 10 NIB ST-1231 31/32 sockets from the TRW era and 4 NIB ST-619 19/32 sockets. I could send you 1 of each for the cost postage if you like.

    Combination wrench identification help.

Not sure of the mfg, but those sizes match the sizes on a typical Bridgeport mill. 11/16 to nod the head, 3/4 for everything else. IIRC a wrench like that was supplied with each mill. Maybe BM stands for Bridgeport Machine?

    Cast Iron Tool Stand

Could have been a stand for an old kick press. Probably had some sort of tie bar between the legs,

got a free stark #4 lathe today,

Post pics! I'm in the process of resurrecting a freebee #4 Stark basket case the fell into my lap from a friend. Mine's just the bed, headstock and tailstock. Had to source a compound and collets and am currently n the process of fabricating a a countershaft. Just finished up building a...

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

That Utica box is a dead ringer for a Park that my dad bought used off a guy in the early 70’s.

    Old Snap On Toolboxes

The roller looks like a Snappy right down to the handle, but I don't think the top box is 1.

Wood cabinets for tool, parts or nuts and bolts or even your socks. please show them

AMP? Small world Mush. The company I was referring to is Edwin B Stimpson. My dad was a die maker who rose to a top management position during his 50 year career there. As a kid in the ‘60s, I remember him taking business trips to AMP. I think he went to Harrisburg, PA. I followed dad into the...

Wood cabinets for tool, parts or nuts and bolts or even your socks. please show them

Mush, nice score on the Moore cabinet! The metal stamping company I started my career at in ‘72 had 4 of them, 1 for each jig borer. I’d love to get 1 for my garage shop, but they bring big bucks even in poor condition. A co-worker of mine also has 1 in his dining room, but it's not in as nice...

    Craftsman Toolbox Thread

I have 1 of those perforated Craftsman totes from back in the 70's when I worked as a maintenance mechanic. Now it's my go-to tote for jobs around the house.

    Gerstner or Union?

I think you'd get more for selling the Gerstner because of the name recognition. I do have both makes. Though I bought a Gerstner for myself, I do have soft spot for Union because my dad had 2 Union boxes, 1 of which I still have.. He said they were always less expensive than Gerstner for...

    Bonney vs. Williams

+1 on a modified wrench. I have a single end 1 - 1/16” Williams that I milled open to 1 - 3/16” when I was working as a maintenance mechanic back in 73. I needed that size to tighten a Mopar right angle oil filter adapter onto my small block to clear headers. One of the pluses of having a...

    ID this old machinists chest

+1 for homemade. As Steve mentioned, the joinery is very crude, and the trim looks like any stock molding you could have bought in a typical lumberyard.

Wiring 120v accessory outlets from a junction box on a Bridgeport

I put my 120V quad box on the rear of the machine, out of the way of the chips. I have 2 work lights, a DRO, and the power feed plugged into it so there are no empty sockets. I've also seen weatherproof boxes used to keep chips out.

    snap on top box id

Nice find! A coworker at my last job had 1. I liked the mix of drawer sizes. Years later I found the Rick Mears version listed on Craigslist. The price was right so I grabbed it. I couldn’t find the matching lower box so mine sits on a SO taco cart.

    The end of Starrett

The tour guide was pretty clear that they were replacing the old multi spindle screw machines with cnc Swiss automatics as they **** out. We used to make a quick change collet system and feed fingers for screw machines. I can’t remember an order for either in over 10 years.

    The end of Starrett

@neophyte: I didn’t about or realize that, thanks. Most companies I’ve worked for just flat out stopped production of old product lines. But the beauty of cnc does allow for production of smaller batches economically compared to doing many operations on older manual machines. That’s what we do...
