New Here:

This particular thread is interesting to me so I thought I would bump it and see if someone has more picks...

Question: How do you make a large shelf with a 45 degree angle arm which is properly supported on the studs on a garage wall that has drywall? I made a shelf out of 2" x 4" and 3/4 " plywood which crashed down after hanging for 1 hour.

Thanks.

David:lol_hitti

If you will post some pics of the shelf (or the crash) I'll try to give you some constructive criticism so your next shelves won't do that.

Thanks mdbeck1 ... I'll try later, although a friend might help me next time w/ hopeful better success.

I absolutely love the shelves Will67 build and if he reads this post I hope he can tell us how to build them. I am sure he used glue and a lot more patience that I am use to using.

Best Regards,

David

Hi tig:
Your Baldhead Cabinets are certainly great looking. Viewing their Web Site gives some good info on their construction and finish.

However NO information on PRICE - Personally I think its a huge waste of their time and perhaps ours to have no idea at all what they cost to begin with.

Would you mind sharing general pricing info with us - for some of the different units - or a general price range for a total your set up... somewhat like yours?

thanks,
Carl B.

They are expensive. My wife paid for them (for my 40th birthday 5 years ago) and I don't remember the total bill (Baldhead installed them too...see my Garage Thread for details).

They are super high quality. I mean REALLY high quality. The fit & finish is perfect.

I wish I could be more specific. But if you really care about quality call them and get a quote.

I'm liking the upper cabinets. Where did ya get them? Are the corrugated or diamond plate?

FYI - since Jeff didn't respond - those appear to be the Seville cabinets that Sam's Club sells. I have a few of them myself.
They are stainless doors - just a horizontal line on the doors - not diamond plate.
The carcass is powder coated steel. They are flat pack - some assembly required.

Jack, you are one creative dude! And you know storage cabinets, and don't seem to have an allegiance to any particular brand.

So, your bio says you're a writer. What do you write? With what you've done with your garage, I'm surprised you're not a designer.

Re: Garage Cabinets and Storage

There is a thread in the "Questions & Suggestions" forum suggesting a storage/cabinet forum; maybe if enough people suggest it, a section can be added. Anyway, this thread is a great idea. I'm planning on building more cabinets to add to my current homemade ones so this should provide some ideas. Below are some pictures of the ones I made. They're not great, but not too bad for my first woodworking project:

I'm trying to keep this thread up on the first page. Lots of people have asked for such a section on the forum. My cabinets are nothing to write home about and I've posted pictures before so here's something new. I have a store on line that needs hits to improve it's ranking on search engines. Take a look tell me what you think and any suggestions for additional products.

Let's see lives in Bellevue, drives a Porsche, has $50,000 worth of cabinets in his garage and younger than me. Not that I'm jealous or anything

OK I am. Living in the relative slums of Southern Washington the only saving grace is our win over the Bellevue team for the state premier soccer title.

Re: Garage Cabinets and Storage

Cheapo Closet Maid from HD but with some additional support brackets and OSB shelves they work for me. Sorry for crappy cell phone pic.

Nice to have closed storage. As dusty as my garage gets the closed cabinets keep stuff clean. My wife started a pantry with Y2K scare that we still use. When you pull something out that says use before 2001 ya just toss it.

Well... considering the Coleman Tall Locker at ShopStorageCabinets dot com are $929.59 - - I'd have to say that the Gladiator at Lowes for $315.00 is at least "inexpensive".

One Woman's Trash Is Another Woman's Treasure

Enviro Elements 68"x27"x15" for $79.00 - might be an alternative if you don't have many larger items to store. Get three of them for $240.00
http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay...gId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1

Lets face it - you are most likely going to store stuff there, so you won't be opening/closing them every day, nor will you be putting a lot of very heavy stuff in them. They are mainly to keep the dust/dirt off stuff in the garage.

The real questions are 1) will they do what you need and 2) are you happy with how they look. No sense buying a storage cabinet that you can put 250 lbs. per shelf on - if you never put more than 50 lb. per shelf on.

Also - always wait until they are On Sale... and shop, shop and shop some more..

Just some thoughts..

Here are some of mine:

One full sheet of 3/4 plywood each. French Cleats to hold them on the walls. Whiteboard as doors, makes keeping track of things easy.

Whiteboard for doors is freaking GENIUS!
I just put a small whiteboard up in my shop, and had notes on it within a day or two.

I like that whiteboard setup. It it just 3 channels dado/routed into a trim piece? though looks simple enough from here.

Here are my storage cabinests. They are the Coleman that Lowe's used to sell.

DSC_3089small.JPG

The "Coleman" brand name was recently purchased by NewAge cabinets. NewAge cabinets are 18 gauge welded steel with full length piano hinges and full extension drawer slides. They added a line of 24 gauge cabinets when the Coleman name was added. Check them out here.

I've seen white board used on garage journal before as the back wall of a workbench. Are you the same guy?

No that was not me. I have white pegboard behind my bench.

Yes I just routed 3 grooves and thats what it sits in. Simple, plus I do not have to ensure there is room in front for the doors to open.

Homemade cabinets finally finished last night. I built the boxes last fall, but with a complete re-do of the garage it took a while to get a finish on them.

They are made of 3/4" plywood, with pocket screw construction. Face frames and door frames were made out of a bunch of 1x6 material that was ripped to the correct widths. I have several hundred board feet of this material. Door panels were made of left over beadboard plywood from the soffit of our covered porch.

The center cabinet is a Harbor Freight 13-drawer box that I disassembled and painted, inside and out. It won't hold any tools as my workbench is on a sidewall and have another 13-drawer box and a couple of roll aways with top boxes on them. The wall area above the HF box is being reserved for a 41" LCD. The homebuilt drawer cab will have a butcher block countertop. I've been looking on craigslist for a while, but am coming up empty. We recently had an Ikea open up close by, so I'll get one of theirs once the crowds die down there a bit.

I still have to trim out the base platforms to cover the gap at the front. There's a fair amount of slope in the slab.

Now that these are done I can finally start moving in my welders, drill press, hydraulic press, and lots of stuff that will go in these cabinets. Right now the stuff that's in them is just there to get it out of the way. Lots of organizing to come along with a small section of pallet racking to the left of these cabinets.

The upper storage will most likely have tempered hardboard, sliding doors. I don't think I have enough beadboard pieces to make the three doors I have planned up there.

Guys, I see a lot of cool, creative, and some really expensive ideas for storage. I do not have a lot of tools: I do not repair cars or anything like that - just a regular home owner with a limited set of tools/things to organize in the garage. I wonder - four pages of ideas and noone (unless I missed it) mentioned a wall-attached wire shelving like the one on a sample picture. Is it because it is not sufficient for most people here with a lot of tools or there is another reason I am not seeing here?

Possibly because the subject is storage cabinets not storage shelving?
