Re: garage refurb

Great work and the support spacing is spot on.
Not sure if you captured it or not but have you thought about installing a hose reel at the end by the overhead door? I have one in the similar location and it comes in handy for quick fills for the vehicles or what ever else.

Re: garage refurb

Nice work... Again! Haha. I'm not liking the "new" Photobucket. I held off using the old version for as long as I was allowed. Oh well, time to get used to it!

Sent from my SGH-I747
Thank you. I tried to hold off using the newer PB but when the notice showed again the other day, I figured the old PB was going to get phased out. That's the reason I decided to make the switch.

Nutts, Loving the air line project. As usual everything is well thought out and executed.
Thank you sir. I basically just followed the old PVC airlines that I removed. I guess you could say that I used the old airlines as a temp layout. :lol_hitti

I appreciate the compliments and the I put the spacing at 24" O.C. I thought of a reel at one time but I decided not too. I have two sections of 25' airline, the drops can pretty much cover the shop where ever I'm at. I don't do much outside, mechanical wise, so connecting the two 25s together generally gets me by. You never know though, maybe things will change one day.

Re: garage refurb

I will only bore you with 2 more airline photos as it is done plumbed and no leaks. I had 1 leak at a 90 which entailed loosening the straps and taking it apart at the union and tightening another union up.

Notice the guage for the blast cabinet drop, we have air pressure in the system.

Before I put stuff away, I took a picture of what I was using.
02092013lastairline001_zpsa1e95089-1.jpg

Starting at the bottom and going clockwise.

Oatey brand Great White pipe joint compound with teflon

Round wire brush to pull thread shavings out of the pipe

my $8 pipe vise from the swap meet

oil can with 15w40

WD-40 spray bottle

HF pipe threader, $26 out the door with 20% coupon, figured I'd try it

Grinder with 60 grit flap disc to clean the end of the cut and put bevel on the end before threading it

old junk drill bit, put a edge on it with the flap disc and used it as a reamer before threading pipe

Any questions, please ask. I'm going back out to touch up any orange paint that I scuffed off during the assembly.

Nothing boring about this thread; great work Eric. Can't yet get out to my garage as I'm deep into a basement workshop overhaul then remodeling the basement bathroom. Got to get it all done while the cold weather is here. But your thread is keeping me very motivated to attack the garage once it warms up. Thanks for a lot of good ideas.

Looks like I found this forum and thread just in time. Took me several hours to get through the whole thing but it makes me feel a little more confident about my next project. Lots of great ideas, too.
Thanks, and well done!
BTW, what are those wood stands made of 4x4s and plywood in the back corner under your workbench?

NuttsGT,
Your air line installation looks great. Now I'm going to have to add standoffs and clamps to mine.

I notice you have a very short section of pipe above the drain valve. That filter/water separator is probably adequate but if you want a larger reservoir, a foot-long pipe like my air line setup holds a quarter-cup of water.
DryerandDripLegs2_zps16f4e92a.jpg

In humid S. Florida, most of the water condenses near the end of my 45-foot run leading to the desiccant dryer, especially when I'm using the blast cabinet or die grinders. The leg on the bottom of the dryer also collects water, just not as much. I have one of those filter/separators at the tank outlet and have yet to get more than a few drops of water in it. Yours should work much better because it's at the point the air has cooled a great deal more.

Re: garage refurb

I must admit, this is starting to be a PITA. I think I have the stuff I need and start plumbing and find I need something else. I made a trip to HD the other night to buy some extra parts, covering what I thought, once again, would be enough to finish this project. I want a couple more 1/4 turn ball valves as I put an extra one in.

01262013airline005.jpg

As you can see, I finished the drop for the blast cabinet. Since it's regulated, I wanted to be able to shut this drop off, so I needed two valves here. What I had was a blue and a yellow handle valve, me being particular, wanted both to match.

Once I had the valves, I thought I needed a 2 1/2" ****** so I picked a couple up. . . then didn't use it. As I was finishing up the drop, screwing the regulator on, I dropped it. Like typical, dropping the regulator broke the guage. I can't win for lose.

On that broken gauge, how did you get it off the regulator? I bought a new gauge but I couldn't get the old one off.....or maybe I wasn't wrenching it hard enough thinking I might break the regulator. Did you have problems with that, or does it reverse threaded?

Welcome to GJ. It's a great place, great guys & gals and a ton of information here.

I use those stands to set up the chassis or whatever needs done with the weight of the car on the tires.

Thanks for the advice my friend. I put that separator in the system about a year ago. I wasn't sure if I was getting any moisture in the sand of the blast cabinet so I plumbed it in. Luckily, the wood burner in the garage keeps the air pretty darn dry which helps out. If it doesn't I'll be switching it out for something better.

The threads are normal, right-tight/left-loose. When I broke it, it merely broke the guage and left the threads of the fitting alone. Maybe you just need to put a little more elbow grease on it.

You did have a wrench on the fitting on the back side and not on the guage itself ?

Re: garage refurb

Are there gals here ?? :dunno:

Yeah! I am probably one of the few gals here. I grew up holding the flashlight for my dad and pumping the brakes to bleed the brakes for his brake jobs. He was a man of the depression...so his take was "girls don't do this kind of work"! But I do, I like tinkering and I own 3 vintage VW bugs in various states of repair. This has been a horrible winter for working out in my VW garage.

Thanks, yep wrench on fitting (9/16")...but it was a short handle wrench and I was in a hurry trying to do something else. If it is warmer this week I'll go back out and work on it. I like the way you put the npt fitting on there because I got the same gauge and like you know it would stick out .

thanks!

Re: garage refurb

NUTTSGT, question about the tools you used for the air plumbing - did you have to cut any pipe to size, and if so, what tool(s) did you use? Also, after using the HF pipe threader, can you give it a 'glowing recommendation' in the HF tool opinion thread? Just curious too, if you have a shutoff valve at the outlet of your compressor so you could totally isolate the piping and do a 'leak-down' pressure check?

No problem. The gauge I happened to buy was made this way as the one I replaced, the fitting was in the back. Since my bench grinder is mounted below this airline plumbing, I didn't want it sticking out more than necessary. I knew it would be a matter of time till I smacked my head on it, not if I hit it.

I didn't realize you were a "girl" most won't admit it on a predominatly male board. It's all good, stick around and enjoy the thread.

I had to cut plenty of pipe to size and then manually thread it with the HF threader. I used a Superior Tool ST-2000 pipe cutter to cut the black pipe, link below.

I wouldn't give the HF threader a glowing recomendation but I would give it a "PASS" for a DIYer. At the 30 dollar price and a 20% off, it was about $26 out the door, I figured I would give it a shot. I read a few others review on it. The guys that it seemed to work for, reamed the pipe and put a taper on it before they started to thread it. That is exactly why I did it and probably the reason I din't have much problem with it.

I put a shut off valve at the beginning of the air line, which allows me to shut the airline down. I always have shut the pressure down after using the air, never (rarely) leaving the system pressurized.

If you need more info, just ask away my friend, I'll try to answer the best I can.

Are you looking to add any Vintage Fire Fighting equipment to your garage? Saw a 1911 fire hose and nozzle on ebay...

$(KGrHqN,!q0FEI1kZSbSBREwBceQ!g~~60_3.JPG

That's neat and all but I've stayed away from Ebay for awhile, since they made changes to leaving feedback and using paypal, I don't think I have bid on anything for 4 years.

NUTTSGT - Nice shop. I see you used Apollo ball valves in your air lines. Good choice. They still made in USA? Did you purchase them locally or online? I have to get some Apollo's but could only find them online. Keep up the good work.

I bought them at Home Depot I believe. Unfortunately, the handles have China on the backside.

I wanted to make an update today, but since PB decided to rework their site and have it so screwed up, I have to postpone the update.

BTW, I will never recommend Photobucket again.

That *****. Thats is what I have been using since I started using digital media. I was holding out on switching to the new version as I was not in favor of it. Finally switched and hate it. Not stable at all. I really do not want to switch but been thinking about it...

Trying to upload, not working, slow, having to manually move pics from "library" to "your library".

I have too many pictures(1200+) there to just move them. Then once I move them, I have to go back and edit every post that I have linked pics with PB. I have been trying to follow along with a thread over at PB and stay on top of what has been happening.

Re: garage refurb

I'm going to update even though I have a few more pictures that will not upload. . . thanks PB:monkey_pi

First things first, gotta take down the beam lights. I don't use these often but they do give extra under hood light when working on a car.

02162013beampics004-1.jpg

This is what I wanted to cover up and make more presentable. It's a mix of early ownership, me ...trying to make the garage useful and previous ownership.

02162013beampics002-1.jpg

There was part of a ceiling in this area when we bought the place. I added the insulation and the foil backed insulation to hold in some heat. The far end of the beam had some 1x8 doubled up that held the 2x4 ceiling rafters. I added the 2x6 to hold more so I could enclose the ceiling.

This is "in progress" work here.
02162013beampics006.jpg

You can see the new 2x I put in to hold up the ceiling rafters. These need to be attached to the beam, which entails drilling through the beam. . fun fun. You can see the 4x6 blocks stacked on the ladder, well if the other picture would load, you would see what I was doing. Basically, I had a small bottle jack sitting on the blocks supporting the ceiling.

Don't worry, there was not much weight. . . the ceiling is only a few 2x4s, 1/2" foil back insulation and some fiberglass R13 batts. Include the weight of the flourescent lights and it's still under the weight limit of that ladder. Take into account that the other end of the ceiling rafters is sitting on the opposite walls, the ladder is more than capable of what I was using it for. I put more stress on the ladder when I'm on it. :scared:

I must have missed it but that beam looks like a great opportunity for trolley lift. Since most of work in our shops alone that third hand comes in very handy.

The ceiling to the right of the beam is 8' so the bottom of the beam is about 7' 4" off the floor. By the time you hang a trolley and a chain fall, it wouldn't be much use. Once I welded the blocking to the front of the beam, supporting the main truss, a trolley wouldn't go all the way across the garage.

I don't have a cherry picker but have access to a few of them. It's just easier to use one of them and then return it back to a buddy. . . . keeps it out of my way.

Ok, I did get this picture uploaded to PB after trying about 5 times. It's just a picture of the bottle jack on blocks stacked up on the ladder to support the small ceiling while I did some work around the beam.

Re: garage refurb

How do you plan to do that now the pipe has already been installed? Maybe just a piece of paper behind so you don't spray the wall?

Possibly, the color I bought is availible in a spray can as well. If not that, I'll hit the visible areas with a brush. There's just a few spots that are light, the paint was thick and didn't spray well.

Sometimes it seems that it needs thinned so much to get it to spray nice, I worry that it's been thinned too much. It'll probably be something I do on a boring day, nothing else to work on and spur of the moment. ;)

Re: garage refurb

I finished up the boxing inthe beam last night. This is the east side of the beam partially done.
02192013beampics007-1.jpg

The west side, I built a small stud like wall. Since the ceiling rafters were attached differently across the beam, I had to change the way I was boxing in the beam.
02192013beampics008-1.jpg

The last of the OSB is up and screwed on. This is merely cosmetic and provides no additional structure to the beam. I thought it would look better closed in on this side side the ceiling is lower.
02192013beampics009-1.jpg

Tomorrow, I'll clean the beam and put a coat of black paint on it.

Re: garage refurb

Eric, how did you mount the vice to that wall?

Vice ? You mean bench grinder ?

It's just two pieces of angle iron welded in a 90° like an angle bracket. The pieces face each other when they were welded together. Then I welded a piece of 1/8" flat steel on the top. The grinder bolts through the plate and the angle (vertical piece) is lagged to the wall.

If I remember, I'll get a picture today.
